Olivia Rodrigo’s Sunday-night Pyramid Stage headline set was a strong contender for Glastonbury 2025’s standout performance. The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis gave it five stars and called it “easily the weekend’s best big set”—a critic’s judgment, not a festival-wide consensus. The set’s case rested on theatrical songs, forceful live arrangements, a fervent crowd and an unexpected appearance by The Cure’s Robert Smith.
What happened at Glastonbury?
Glastonbury Festival 2025 ran at Worthy Farm from June 25 to June 29. Rodrigo headlined the Pyramid Stage on Sunday, June 29, the festival’s final night, after appearing on the Other Stage in 2022. The Associated Press reported on her headline performance: Associated Press coverage.
Why did reviewers call it a weekend highlight?
A surprise pairing with Robert Smith
The Cure’s Robert Smith joined Rodrigo for “Friday I’m in Love” and “Just Like Heaven.” The Guardian described the appearance as genuinely unexpected, but its review argued that Rodrigo had already won over the crowd before Smith arrived. The Guardian’s review awarded the performance five stars.
Theatrical shifts in sound
Petridis praised the theatricality of Rodrigo’s lovelorn songs and the heavier live treatment of the pop-punk material, including forceful guitar solos. He wrote: “With a genuinely surprise appearance from the Cure’s Robert Smith and a magnificent theatricality to her lovelorn songs, Rodrigo totally steals the entire festival.”

An emotionally engaged crowd
The Independent highlighted the audience response to “Vampire,” “Driver’s License” and “Traitor,” with the latter two performed at the piano. The Guardian also described fans singing along passionately. Together, the reviews portray a set that connected through both big pop-punk moments and quieter, exposed performances. The Independent’s review praised the show as an immersive experience.
A set that kept its momentum
The Guardian called the show balanced and said it never lagged as it moved between pop-punk and ballads. The Independent offered a useful qualification: the setlist was close to Rodrigo’s touring repertoire. The performance’s distinction, then, was less about unveiling a radically different song list than about its live delivery, pacing and Smith’s surprise contribution.

Was it objectively the best set of the weekend?
There was no systematic, side-by-side ranking of Glastonbury’s headline sets in the reviews cited here, and critics’ opinions do not establish universal agreement. “Best” is most defensible as an attributed critical verdict: Petridis’s five-star Guardian review called it “easily the weekend’s best big set,” while The Independent also praised it as a “killer headline set.” Neither review supplies a measured audience-reception statistic, so the Guardian’s star rating should be read as a critic’s score rather than a measure of festival-wide consensus.
