The Paris 2024 opening ceremony became a focus for Palestinian solidarity, but the documented events need separating: Palestinian flag-bearer Waseem Abu Sal wore a shirt depicting children being bombed in Gaza, while the sources reviewed do not confirm that a planned large demonstration took place during the ceremony. A separately documented protest had occurred months earlier, outside the Olympic organizers’ headquarters in Saint-Denis.
What happened at the Olympic opening ceremony?
The ceremony took place along the Seine on July 26, 2024. Contemporaneous reporting by Al-Monitor and Ynet said Palestinian flag-bearer Waseem Abu Sal wore a shirt depicting children being bombed in Gaza. The shirt was a visible symbolic expression at the event; the cited reports do not include a direct statement from Abu Sal explaining its meaning.
That documented gesture is distinct from an organized protest inside the ceremony. A day earlier, The Guardian reported that pro-Palestinian organizers were discussing a high-profile demonstration around the event, but the sources cited here do not establish that it happened during the ceremony.
Did athletes show support for Palestine at the opening ceremony?
Abu Sal’s shirt is the specific Palestinian-related gesture documented in the contemporaneous reports cited here. The Guardian’s July 25 advance report said unnamed national delegations might display Palestinian flags or wear messages of solidarity; it presented these as possibilities, not confirmed actions. The evidence does not establish that those predicted gestures occurred or measure the overall level of Palestinian support among ceremony participants.

The IOC’s account concerns refugees generally, not Palestinian advocacy: IOC newsroom, July 26, 2024.
Why were people protesting Israel’s participation in the Paris Olympics?
On April 30, around 300 demonstrators rallied outside the Paris Olympic organizing committee headquarters in Saint-Denis, according to the Associated Press. They waved Palestinian flags and called for limits on Israel’s participation, arguing that the IOC should treat Israel comparably to Russian athletes, who competed under neutral status after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

AP quoted protester Nicolas Shahshahani, a member of EuroPalestine, saying: “They didn’t need more than four days to decide to ban Russia and Belorussia from the Olympics after the invasion of Ukraine.” That comparison was the protesters’ argument; it was not an IOC ruling that the cases were equivalent.
How did the IOC explain the difference between Israel and Russia?
In a March 19, 2024 interview with Le Monde, IOC President Thomas Bach said the Israeli Olympic Committee had not violated the Olympic Charter in the way he said Russia had by breaching Ukraine’s territorial integrity. He also said Israel and Palestine each had a national Olympic committee. This was Bach’s stated rationale, not an independent legal finding about the conflict or the Charter.
