Hulk Hogan helped turn WWE into a mainstream entertainment force, then reinvented himself as the villain at the center of WCW’s New World Order. But his legacy is also bound to a racism scandal, a high-profile privacy lawsuit and political appearances that drew a hostile response from some wrestling fans. Hogan died on July 24, 2025, aged 71; his influence on wrestling and the controversies surrounding him remain difficult to separate.

How Hulk Hogan became a defining wrestling star

Terry Gene Bollea began wrestling in 1977 and made his WWE debut in 1979. His breakthrough came on January 23, 1984, when he defeated the Iron Sheik for the WWE Championship. The red-and-yellow Hulkamania character—an outsized hero who urged fans to believe—helped WWE reach a much larger audience during the 1980s.

WWE’s July 2025 obituary says Hogan headlined the first WrestleMania alongside Mr. T, defeated Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III and main-evented WrestleMania eight times. WWE credits him with five WWE Championship reigns in his first major run, through 1993, and a sixth after his 2002 return. These are WWE’s own career figures and descriptions, rather than an independent measure of his cultural impact.

The scale of his fame mattered beyond title records. Hogan’s persona gave WWE a recognizable central star as it expanded its national profile, and helped make professional wrestling a more prominent part of popular entertainment. That contribution is the foundation of his legacy, but not the whole of it.

Why Hogan’s WCW reinvention mattered

Hogan joined WCW in 1994, carrying the familiar red-and-yellow hero image with him. His turn against the established heroes changed the meaning of that persona: he became Hollywood Hogan, adopting black-and-white colors and joining Scott Hall and Kevin Nash to form the New World Order, or nWo.

The shift showed how effectively Hogan could use his established image in a different role. The nWo became a major force in WCW’s rivalry with WWE’s Monday Night Raw during the Monday Night War. WWE credits Hogan with six WCW World Heavyweight Championship reigns and describes his leadership of the group as helping reignite sports-entertainment’s popularity in the 1990s. That is an institutional assessment from WWE, a company central to the rivalry being described.

What happened in the Gawker case?

In 2012, Gawker published a clip from a sex tape featuring Hogan. He said the recording had been made without his knowledge and sued over its publication, making the case a prominent dispute about personal privacy and press freedom.

ABC News’ 2025 retrospective reports that a 2016 civil trial resulted in a $140 million award and that the case later ended in a $31 million settlement. Those are ABC’s reported figures, not a complete account of the litigation’s procedural history. The case became part of Hogan’s public legacy not because it erased his wrestling achievements, but because it raised difficult questions about where the public’s interest ends and a person’s privacy begins.

Why WWE cut ties with Hogan in 2015

In 2015, reporting on recordings containing racial slurs prompted WWE to cut ties with Hogan and remove him from its Hall of Fame. ABC News’ timeline also notes homophobic language and a second recording from 2008; the scandal was not limited to one isolated line.

Hogan apologized after the recordings became public, saying: “It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it.” WWE reinstated him to its Hall of Fame in 2018, according to the Associated Press. That institutional decision restored his place in WWE’s Hall, but it did not settle how fans or the wider public would judge the scandal.

How politics and fan reactions complicated his image

Hogan endorsed Donald Trump at the 2024 Republican National Convention, delivering the endorsement with wrestling-style slogans. At the January 2025 premiere of WWE’s Netflix-era Raw, he was booed by fans, according to ABC News. Those moments show a public image that had become more politically charged, but they do not establish that every fan shared the same view.

The Associated Press reported former wrestler Mark Henry calling the scandal a “dark cloud” over Hogan’s career and saying Hogan “never wanted to go forward and fix it.” Those are Henry’s judgments, not a consensus statement about Hogan or his fans. The booing, the apology and WWE’s reinstatement each capture a different part of the response: rejection, an acknowledged wrong and an institutional willingness to welcome him back.

Why Hogan’s legacy remains contested

Hogan’s wrestling character and his conduct as a public figure can be discussed separately, but audiences are not obliged to keep them separate. The same fame that helped make Hulkamania a cultural force made the person behind the character difficult to detach from the scandals and public choices that followed.

WWE’s July 2025 obituary emphasized Hogan’s role in the company’s growth and in the nWo’s popularity. The Associated Press, reporting on his death and the reactions to his career, also documented the lasting weight of the racial-slur scandal. Hogan died on July 24, 2025, at 71. Tributes after his death could recognize a transformative performer without requiring fans to overlook the controversies; criticism could acknowledge his influence without denying his accomplishments. That unresolved tension is central to why his legacy remains complicated.
