No. Netflix’s official materials quote ONE PIECE creator Eiichiro Oda discussing the adaptation and the importance of keeping Nami true to her character, but they do not say he called Nami, actor Emily Rudd, or her casting “perfect.” That word is a headline judgment, not a documented Oda quote in the cited sources.
What Oda actually said about Netflix’s live-action Straw Hats
In a September 18, 2023 interview with Netflix Tudum, Oda described his concern about whether the Straw Hats would translate to the screen. He said: “But Netflix and I were able to get aligned, and I think we ended up with Straw Hat characters that work uniquely in live-action, with the actors breathing life into them in their own way.” Read the Netflix Tudum interview.
Oda also explained what mattered most in adapting the central cast: “if Luffy doesn’t feel like Luffy, or if Nami doesn’t feel like Nami, etc, nothing else will matter. So staying true to the characters was the most important factor.” This supports saying that he emphasized character fidelity; it does not support attributing the specific word “perfect” to him.
Who plays Nami, and how does Netflix describe her?
Emily Rudd plays adult Nami in Netflix’s live-action ONE PIECE; Lily Fisher plays her as a child. Netflix’s character guide describes Nami as the crew’s navigator and a skilled cartographer. Her dream is to draw a map of the world. The guide quotes Rudd explaining that Nami learned navigation both because she loved it and because she was forced to do it.

In a separate Netflix cast feature, Rudd calls Nami “the cool, calm, collected cat burglar of the group,” and describes her as clever and skilled with a bo staff. Those are Rudd’s character comments, not an Oda statement that the casting or performance is perfect. See Netflix’s cast feature.
What Netflix’s renewal announcement confirms
Netflix’s September 14, 2023 renewal announcement identifies Oda as the manga’s creator, illustrator, and an executive producer, and Rudd as Nami. Oda said he had spent a long time working with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios on season one, then wrote: “The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward!” The announcement confirms his involvement and the series renewal, not a “perfect Nami” endorsement. - Documented quote: Oda said the live-action Straw Hat characters “work uniquely” and that staying true to their identities was the most important factor.
- Fair paraphrase: Oda publicly described alignment with Netflix and stressed that Nami must still feel like Nami.
- Not established by these sources: That Oda called Nami, Rudd, or the casting “perfect.”
The evidence here is specific to the official Netflix materials cited above. It does not establish that Oda could never have used the word elsewhere; it shows that these sources do not substantiate the headline’s wording.
