The strongest reason to watch Anusha Rizvi’s The Great Shamsuddin Family is its women: a lively, distinctive ensemble whose exchanges make a crowded Delhi household feel intimate and recognisable. Critics also point to a real weakness—the family’s many arrivals and storylines can leave the film overfull and tonally uneven.
What the film is about
Bani Ahmed (Kritika Kamra), a writer trying to finish a time-sensitive academic application, keeps being interrupted as relatives, friends and acquaintances fill her Delhi apartment. The revolving-door setup turns one person’s deadline into a family gathering, with domestic comedy sharing space with personal worries and social tension.

The central women include Bani’s sister Iram (Shreya Dhanwanthary), eldest sister Humaira (Juhi Babbar Soni), mother Asiya (Dolly Ahluwalia), aunt Akko (Farida Jalal) and Saafiya (Sheeba Chaddha). Their different relationships to Bani give the household its range: affection and obligation sit alongside impatience, advice and competing needs.
Why the actresses are the main attraction
Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath praises the performances, sharp dialogue and lived-in intimacy, singling out Farida Jalal as especially effective. The ensemble’s appeal lies less in a single star turn than in the way the women’s voices and relationships rub against one another. Bani is trying to protect time for her own future; the people around her arrive with demands and concerns of their own.

Kamra described Bani’s emotional center in an OTTplay interview as: “I don’t want to take care; I want to be cared for,” a concise expression of the imbalance between the care Bani gives and the care she wants. In the same interview, Kamra called the characters “messy but also likeable, imperfect but also, you know, it’s just that they seem so real and like people you know…” That is an actor’s description of the ensemble, and it aligns with the warmth critics find in the character work.
Where the crowded story works—and where it strains
The pile-up of visitors creates comic energy, but the film also takes on family obligations, social anxiety and obstacles around an interfaith relationship. Those strands lend the domestic bustle a more serious edge. They are the film’s framing of contemporary Muslim women’s lives, not a comprehensive portrait of a community.

Rizvi told The Indian Express that the interfaith-marriage thread drew on an incident involving a couple whose magistrate opposed their application and then fell ill on the day they were due to appear. This is the director’s reported inspiration, not a claim that the film documents that couple’s case. Rizvi also said, “It started really with Amitav’s character,” referring to the starting point for professor Amitav, played by Purab Kohli.
Critics differ in emphasis, but both identify unevenness. Ramnath’s Scroll review praises the actors while finding the film overstuffed and tonally inconsistent; some scenes and subplots distract from the sisters. Anisha Rao’s India Today review similarly describes a warm but messy, uneven cascade of arrivals and conflicts, rating it 2.5 out of 5 stars. That is Rao’s individual rating, not an audience score or consensus measure.

Does the apartment setting help?
The confined setting supports the film’s central pleasure: seeing personalities collide in one shared domestic space. Rizvi told The Indian Express, “This is an intimate story, it had to be told in a more intimate set-up.” She has also said that using one or fewer locations helped manage the budget.
That intimacy has a trade-off. Ramnath finds that the stage-like production reinforces the single-location quality without always helping the film. Kamra estimated that roughly 95% of the film takes place inside one house and described the shoot as about 25 days or possibly fewer in an OTTplay interview. Rizvi separately told Bollywood Hungama that it took eight years to get the film made and was shot in about 24 days. These are their respective accounts, not a single independently established production schedule.

Where to watch The Great Shamsuddin Family
Contemporaneous reporting said the Hindi-language film premiered on JioHotstar on December 12, 2025; OTTplay reported it streaming there on December 14. Those are historical release reports, not confirmation of current availability in every country. Check the JioHotstar catalogue for your territory before making plans to watch.
Is it worth watching?
If you are drawn to ensemble acting, sharp family exchanges and character-led domestic comedy, the performances are the film’s clearest draw. If you prefer a tightly controlled plot and consistent tone, the accumulation of subplots and the apartment-bound, stage-like presentation may frustrate. The available criticism makes the actresses—and the warmth they bring to the household—the best reason to give it a try, while making clear that the storytelling is less assured.
