The Oak Ridge Boys’ announcement also shared a family notice and memorial arrangements. It named his wife, Mary Ann; daughters Jennifer and Sabrina; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sister Nancy. The announcement said Bonsall requested no funeral and that donations in lieu of flowers could be made to The ALS Association or Vanderbilt Medical Center’s ALS and Neuroscience Research Center. Those were the arrangements stated in 2024, not confirmation of current donation instructions.
What happened to Joe Bonsall before his death?
Bonsall announced his retirement from touring in January 2024 after years of health problems. The Associated Press obituary, published by The Washington Post, reported that he had been battling ALS for four years. In his retirement statement, reproduced on the Oak Ridge Boys’ website, Bonsall described his condition as a “slow onset neuromuscular disorder” and said walking had become impossible. He said he was retiring from the road, while the group would complete its Farewell Tour with Ben James singing in his place.

Joe Bonsall’s career with the Oak Ridge Boys
Before joining the Oak Ridge Boys in 1973, Bonsall sang with the gospel group the Keystones, according to the Associated Press obituary. He became one of the group’s defining voices, singing tenor during a hit-making period that brought its music to country and pop audiences.
