Nymphomaniac: Volume I is Lars von Trier’s chapter-based drama about Joe, a woman who recounts her adolescence and early adult life to Seligman, the stranger who finds her injured. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays Joe in the framing scenes, while Stacy Martin plays her younger self. The film is sexually explicit, but much of it unfolds through conversation, memory and the analogies Seligman brings to Joe’s story.

What is Nymphomaniac: Volume I about?

Joe is found badly beaten in an alley by Seligman, who takes her in and treats her wounds. As they talk, she tells him about experiences from her youth and early adulthood. The frame story gives the film its central tension: Joe presents her life in her own terms, while Seligman listens and responds through his own interests and interpretations. Magnolia Pictures’ film page describes Joe as a self-diagnosed “nymphomaniac.” That is the character’s self-description and the film’s title language, not a current clinical diagnosis or a label to apply to real people.

Volume I concentrates on Joe’s younger years. The distributor describes Volume II as following her adulthood into darker complications, so Volume I is the opening part of a larger story rather than a complete account of Joe’s life. Magnolia’s extended-cut profile also places the two volumes within the film’s larger structure.

How is the film structured?

The story is divided into chapters, including “The Compleat Angler,” “Jerôme,” “Mrs. H,” “Delirium” and “The Little Organ School.” The chapter structure allows Joe’s recollections to move through episodes and detours rather than follow a simple, uninterrupted chronology. Analogies are part of the conversation: Seligman uses his own interests to interpret what Joe tells him, creating room to notice the difference between her account and his response. These exchanges can be read as a question about who gets to frame a story, without treating either character’s interpretation as the film’s final word.

Von Trier described the conception in a Cannes-hosted interview: “But it’s no fun if they’re just humping away all the time”. He continued, “Then it’ll just be a porn flick.” Those are the director’s comments about the project, not a neutral definition of the finished film. Read the Cannes-hosted interview.

What is the difference between the theatrical version and the director’s cut?

The versions differ in length and content. Magnolia says the extended director’s cut contains over an hour of scenes and footage absent from the original version. The 2013 production press kit described an abridged release split into two parts, with the most explicit genital close-ups removed, and outlined a longer version planned for later distribution. The press kit’s description is historical release information; it does not establish which editions are available now or the exact runtime of a particular copy.

Original or abridged version The 2013 press kit describes an abridged version in two parts, with the most explicit genital close-ups removed. September Film’s 2013 press kit Confirm that the listing identifies the abridged or original version, and whether it is Volume I only.
Extended director’s cut Magnolia says it includes over an hour of scenes and footage absent from the original version. The press kit historically described the longer version as 5.5 hours; that plan is not proof of the runtime of a current edition. Magnolia’s extended-cut profile and the 2013 press kit Check that the edition explicitly says “extended director’s cut,” and verify its runtime and included volumes with the seller or platform.

When comparing copies, look for the cut, whether the listing includes Volume I or both volumes, physical format, and disc-region compatibility. A listing that says only “Volume I” does not establish that it includes Volume II or the complete extended cut.

Is Nymphomaniac: Volume I explicit?

Yes. The film contains graphic sexual content, so it may not suit viewers seeking a restrained depiction. At the same time, it is substantially conversational: Joe’s story is told to Seligman, and the chapter-based structure gives the film a great deal of dialogue and reflection. The explicit imagery is one part of the film, not the whole form of its storytelling.

  • Drama in 2013 by Lars von Trier Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard.

How were the sex scenes filmed?

In a 2014 CBS News interview, Stacy Martin said sexual imagery was assembled using prosthetics, CGI and separately filmed body doubles. This is cast-reported production context, not a claim that every scene was made in the same way. Read the CBS News interview with Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stacy Martin.

What do the performances bring to the story?

Gainsbourg and Martin portray Joe at different ages, while Gainsbourg’s adult Joe carries the framing conversation with Seligman. In the CBS News interview, Gainsbourg described Joe as vulnerable beneath a self-protective presentation and said she was drawn to the character’s pride in telling her story. That is the actor’s perspective on the role; the film leaves viewers room to judge how Joe’s pride, vulnerability and self-account shape what they hear.
