Mayra Nevárez Torres was resentenced on December 29, 2025, to serve 15 years in prison for the 2021 crash that killed Justin Santos Delanda, brother of Puerto Rican singer Arcángel, and seriously injured Keven Monserrate Gandía. The prison term replaced an earlier arrangement for the same 15-year sentence to be served under house arrest with electronic monitoring.
What happened in the crash
According to the Puerto Rico Court of Appeals’ account of the case, at about 2:32 a.m. on November 21, 2021, Nevárez Torres was driving against traffic on the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge in San Juan while intoxicated. Her vehicle struck a Can-Am carrying Santos Delanda and Monserrate Gandía. Santos Delanda died at the scene, and Gandía suffered serious bodily injury. The Puerto Rico Department of Justice also reported the .29% reading and identified 0.08% as the legal limit for driving a motor vehicle. These are figures reported in this case, not a broader estimate of impaired-driving risk. Department of Justice release.
Why the sentence changed
In January 2025, the trial court sentenced Nevárez Torres to 15 years under house arrest with electronic monitoring. The Court of Appeals later vacated that sentencing arrangement and ordered that the 15-year term be served in prison. The Puerto Rico Supreme Court denied review in June 2025. In December, it denied a second request for reconsideration, after which the trial court resentenced her to prison.

The change was in how the sentence would be served, not its reported length: the initial sentence and the December resentencing were both 15 years. The appellate decision is the primary source for the April ruling and its procedure. The December 29 resentencing and its stated term are reported by El Tiempo.

What is established about the final resentencing
El Tiempo reported that Nevárez Torres addressed the court at the resentencing, saying: “Ese día no salí con la intención de causarle daño a nadie, eso nunca estuvo en mi mente ni en mi corazón, pero no hay excusa para lo que hice”. Puerto Rico Secretary of Justice Lourdes L. Gómez Torres said the resentencing brought justice to Santos Delanda’s family and friends and to Gandía, who was gravely injured.
