By 2012–2013, IMVU had clear signs of historical business traction as it expanded from avatar chat and virtual rooms into a broader social entertainment service: it reported more than 100 million registered accounts, substantial virtual-goods sales, and profitable operations. But the milestone was a count of registrations—not 100 million active users—and the available figures do not prove that the strategic shift caused the growth or establish how the company performs today.
What did IMVU’s 100 million milestone measure?
GamesBeat reported on August 20, 2012, that IMVU had passed 100 million registered users. That is a cumulative account-registration figure. It is not a measure of monthly or daily active users, concurrent users, or 100 million distinct people using the service at that moment. GamesBeat’s 2012 report also attributed a $50 million annual revenue figure and more than 10 million virtual goods to the company.
In an April 8, 2013 company announcement, IMVU described more than 111 million registered accounts and separately said millions of unique users interacted each month. Keeping those measures separate matters: registrations show accumulated reach, while the monthly figure is the more relevant of the two for ongoing usage. The release did not provide a precise monthly-user count. IMVU’s 2013 anniversary release is a company-originated account of its own scale and performance.
How did IMVU change from a virtual world into a social service?
From avatar rooms to social entertainment
IMVU’s early experience centered on people creating 3D rooms and chatting through avatars. It broadened that proposition by adding games and other social features. The shift was not away from avatars or virtual spaces; it made them the setting for a wider mix of meeting people, chatting, playing, expressing identity, and buying or creating digital goods.

By 2013, IMVU described members meeting people, chatting, creating, and playing games with friends, and announced Android and iPad applications to extend the service beyond desktop. Its official about page continues to present avatar customization, virtual currency, socializing, and creativity as core parts of the service. That description establishes the company’s stated positioning, not the size or activity of its current audience.
Member-made goods became part of the product
The virtual-goods economy was central to the broader service. In 2012, GamesBeat reported more than 10 million virtual goods, most made by members. IMVU’s 2013 release said the catalog exceeded 15 million products, with more than 16,000 new products added daily, and that almost all catalog goods were made by customers. The same release said IMVU had more than 500,000 creators and that some earned over $100,000 annually from virtual-goods sales. These are historical company-reported figures, not present-day totals or independently audited creator earnings.

What evidence supports calling the move a success?
Reach and commercial traction
The case for historical success rests on several signals reported in 2012 and 2013: a growing registration count, millions of monthly unique users reported separately, a large member-made catalog, and revenue figures. GamesBeat reported that IMVU said it generated $50 million a year. In 2013, the company reported an annual revenue rate above $55 million and said it operated profitably. These are different dated snapshots, and both revenue claims were company-reported; they should not be mistaken for audited results or a consistent financial series.
Together, those measures support a limited conclusion: by 2012–2013, IMVU had built substantial reach and commercial activity around social interaction, virtual goods, and user creation. They do not isolate the effect of the product transition from other factors, establish retention or engagement trends, or show that the business remained equally successful over the years that followed.

Why the evidence does not settle the question today
A company profile describes millions of users, more than 400,000 destinations, and a catalog of 60 million items, but the figures are undated promotional claims rather than a comparable time series. IMVU’s corporate profile does not supply a dated active-user or revenue measure that can be compared with the 2012–2013 figures. Without those measures, a present-day verdict on scale or financial performance would go beyond what the published evidence establishes.
What happened after the milestone?
IMVU’s later activity shows the service continued to evolve, though activity alone does not establish current audience size. Its 2024 anniversary campaign featured creator showcases, social events, virtual gifts, and credit promotions. The company’s news archive also records later age-verification updates and a 2026 IMVU-Blox announcement. These are evidence of ongoing product and community initiatives, not proof of current user growth, engagement, or revenue.

Was IMVU’s transition a success?
On the evidence available for 2012–2013, yes—with a defined scope. IMVU’s move from a more narrowly described avatar-based world toward social entertainment supported a large registered-account base, a substantial creator economy, mobile expansion, and company-reported revenue and profitability. The evidence supports historical traction, not a causal claim that the transition alone produced it, a claim of 100 million active users, or a verdict on IMVU’s current business performance.
