In 2011, reports from Lebanon described two separate actions involving Lady Gaga: authorities impounded shipments of her album Born This Way at Beirut airport, and the song Judas was reportedly banned from Lebanese radio. A different episode took place in Malaysia, where radio stations played an edited version of the song Born This Way. The actions involved different works and different authorities; they were not one worldwide ban.
What happened in Lebanon?
Contemporary reports described an airport impoundment of copies of Born This Way, Lady Gaga’s album, and a separate radio ban involving her song Judas.
The album shipments
On June 6, 2011, Global News reported that Lebanese authorities had intercepted shipments of Born This Way at Beirut airport, keeping the discs from reaching music-store shelves. The report said no formal decision to ban the album had been made at that point. Global News’ June 6 report
The Guardian reported the next day that Lebanon’s General Security had impounded boxes of the album as they arrived at Beirut International Airport the previous week. It also described reports of a ruling. These accounts establish that shipments were reported impounded, but they do not settle whether or when a formal album ban took effect. The separate radio report about Judas
The Guardian said Judas had been banned from Lebanese radio in April 2011, before the album impoundment was reported. Global News likewise described the song as already banned from the airwaves. The song-ban report should not be confused with the later action against album shipments.
Reported rationale
The Guardian attributed the Lebanese objections to offense to Christianity. It cited language it identified as article 75 of Lebanon’s law for distribution of print media, concerning public decency, morality, and nationalistic or religious beliefs, and quoted Father Abdo Abu Kassm, director of the Catholic Information Centre: “If they are going to offend us we are going to cancel the album,”

That explanation comes from the newspaper’s account of the stated rationale. The reporting does not include the official impoundment order or a primary legal text, so it should not be treated as a direct examination of the legal basis.

Malaysia’s 2011 episode involved the song Born This Way, not the album shipment reported in Lebanon and not the song Judas. In a March 18 report, The Guardian said Malaysian radio stations continued to play Born This Way but bleeped references to being gay, straight, bisexual, lesbian, or transgender.
