In March 2024, streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins said a mole removed from the sole of his foot had tested positive for melanoma. He said his doctors were optimistic it had been caught early, but his public statement did not identify a stage or provide a later health update.
What did Ninja reveal about his skin cancer?
Blevins said he went to a dermatologist for an annual skin and mole check. A mole on the bottom of his foot was removed “just to be careful,” and the result came back as melanoma, according to his statement reproduced by CBS Detroit on March 28, 2024.
He said doctors were optimistic that it had been caught in the early stages. That is his account of their outlook, not a published stage or a confirmed prognosis. CBS Detroit also reported that he said another dark spot near the removal site was being biopsied and a larger area had been removed. He expressed hope for clear margins; the report does not establish that the margins were clear.
How was the melanoma found?
It was found during a routine dermatologist visit, after a mole on the sole of his foot was checked and removed. Blevins said his wife, Jess, had proactively scheduled the annual appointment. He was 32 at the time of the disclosure, according to CBS Detroit. The report also described him as having 19 million Twitch followers at that time; that is a dated figure, not a current audience count.

Melanoma can develop on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, where a concerning spot may be less obvious than one on routinely exposed skin. The American Cancer Society describes acral melanoma as potentially appearing as a dark, irregular area in these locations and advises showing concerning areas to a doctor: Signs and Symptoms of Melanoma Skin Cancer.
Warning signs include a new spot, a spot changing in size, shape, or color, or one that looks different from a person’s other spots. The ACS’s ABCDE guide asks people to look for asymmetry, an irregular border, varied color, diameter, and evolving appearance. These are prompts for noticing changes, not a way to diagnose melanoma at home. A clinician can assess a spot and, when appropriate, biopsy it; diagnosis and stage require medical evaluation. What should someone do about a new or changing spot?
- Arrange a medical evaluation. Contact a doctor about a new or changing spot, including one on a sole or palm. Do not wait for it to become painful or assume that an app can tell you whether it is cancer.
- Check skin regularly. The ACS says many doctors recommend monthly self-exams, while noting it does not have its own early-detection guideline. A self-exam can help you notice changes, but it does not replace assessment by a trained health professional.
- Do not use a phone app as a diagnosis. The ACS notes concerns about the accuracy of skin-cancer apps and says more research is needed before expert groups would recommend them. Have a concerning area evaluated by a health professional.

What can reduce UV exposure?
Sun-safety measures can reduce ultraviolet exposure, but they are not treatment and cannot guarantee that melanoma will be prevented. The American Cancer Society recommends a combination of protective steps:

- Wear protective clothing and sunglasses.
- Apply sunscreen to uncovered skin.
- Avoid tanning beds and other artificial tanning devices.

Blevins urged people to take his experience as a reason to get skin checkups. In a statement quoted by CBS Detroit, he said: “please take this as a PSA to get skin checkups.” His account shows how a routine appointment led to a concerning finding on a part of the body that can be easy to overlook; it does not provide a medical update beyond what he disclosed in March 2024.
