Nintendo and Illumination announced The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on September 12, 2025, describing it as an animated follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The announcement established the film’s title and initial cast, but did not provide a transcript or scene-by-scene description of the teaser. The film has since opened: Nintendo’s US page lists its theatrical release date as April 1, 2026.
What Nintendo announced in the first teaser announcement
Nintendo and Illumination announced the film’s official title, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, on September 12, 2025. Nintendo described it as “an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” and said it would follow the 2023 film. Nintendo’s announcement is the authoritative source for those details.
The available announcement confirms the title and cast, but does not include a transcript or scene-by-scene account of the initial teaser. Specific claims about shots, dialogue, or plot revealed in that video therefore cannot be established from the announcement text.
Who was in the first cast announcement
The September 2025 announcement named six cast members:
#1 Best Overall
- Runtime: 95 minutes
- Chris Pratt as Mario
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
- Charlie Day as Luigi
- Jack Black as Bowser
- Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
- Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
Nintendo said additional characters and cast would be announced later. Its March 2026 update added Donald Glover as Yoshi, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, and Luis Guzmán as Wart; the full cast summary also listed Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. and Brie Larson as Rosalina. These are later updates, not part of the initial announcement. Nintendo’s March 2026 release gives the updated cast and regional release information.
Release date: the date depended on territory
The film’s release timing was not universal. Nintendo’s March 2026 release listed April 1, 2026, for the United States and many additional markets, April 24 for Japan, and said select territories released throughout April. Nintendo’s current US movie page lists April 1, 2026, and says “Only in Theaters.”

How the movie connects to the Galaxy games
Nintendo’s US movie page points fans toward enhanced versions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, playable on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s February 2026 product schedule lists both games and the combined title Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2. That makes the games a related optional companion for anyone wanting to explore the Galaxy setting; the announcement does not establish that the movie adapts either game scene by scene. Nintendo’s February 2026 product schedule lists the titles.

Nintendo and Illumination cited more than $1.3 billion in worldwide gross for the 2023 The Super Mario Bros. Movie in the September 2025 announcement. That figure belongs to the predecessor, not The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and should not be mistaken for the newer film’s box-office total.
