During her opening monologue at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards on January 5, 2025, Nikki Glaser began a parody of “Popular” from Wicked that brought in Conclave. Then she pretended to get a backstage call telling her to stop. The interruption was the punchline: Glaser made her own performance the target, rather than suffering a real musical or technical mishap.
How the skit unfolds
Glaser launches into an intentionally overblown musical bit, pairing the world of Wicked with the papal thriller Conclave. The song reference is “Popular,” the Wicked number.
She breaks off to take a staged call from her team backstage, then ends the performance as if they have warned her it is not working. TIME reports her line as: “Wait, this sucks? This whole thing sucks? I’m embarrassing myself in front of Elton John?”
Why Glaser stops singing
The interruption turns the performance into a joke about Glaser’s own attempt. She acts as though the number has failed and cuts it short herself; the call is part of the bit, not evidence of a genuine backstage intervention or a technical problem. The Associated Press likewise described the moment as a “Wicked” meets “Conclave” parody of “Popular” that stops after a staged backstage call.
