This is the archived NYT Connections: Sports Edition puzzle for Friday, December 5, 2025, game #438. Start with the spoiler-light clues below; category names and the complete answer groups follow in separate stages.

Hints for Connections: Sports Edition #438

Parade’s December 5, 2025, guide offers these broad clues, in order:

  1. The beautiful game.
  2. Cities hosting the 2026 tournament.
  3. “It’s coming home. Maybe?”
  4. Countries new to the big event.

If you want to keep solving, pause here and look for the shared idea behind each clue. The board mixes soccer terms, place names, player surnames and national teams. The Word Finder’s archive also presents a staged reveal—hints, groups and individual words—so you can uncover help gradually; it is a third-party aid, not an established official NYT feature.

Answers for December 5, 2025

Spoilers below: Parade reports the following answer groups for #438. The Word Finder independently lists the same sixteen board tiles, corroborating the tile set; its archive page does not show the category labels.

  • The beautiful game, in different countries: CALCIO, FOOTBALL, FÚTBOL, SOCCER. These are terms for the sport in different languages.
  • 2026 World Cup host cities: ATLANTA, EAST RUTHERFORD, MEXICO CITY, TORONTO.
  • English men’s soccer players: FODEN, KANE, RICE, SAKA. The connection is the players’ surnames.
  • Countries qualified for their first World Cup in 2026: CAPE VERDE, CURAÇAO, JORDAN, UZBEKISTAN.

Accents are retained in FÚTBOL and CURAÇAO. The answer key is attributed to Parade; the available archive evidence does not establish that these answers were checked against a directly accessed official NYT board.

How to approach a similar board

  • Test for a shared category, not just a shared sport. A board can mix vocabulary, locations, athletes and countries, as this one does.
  • Look for alternate names. When several tiles appear to name the same activity, consider whether they are language variants rather than teams or players.
  • Read proper names in context. Cities and surnames may be hard to distinguish until you connect them to the event or national team.
  • Use hints incrementally. Try the broad clues first, then check a category label only if needed, and leave the word-by-word reveal until last.
