National Canadian Film Day 2026 took place on Wednesday, April 15. REEL CANADA announced 2,000 free screenings ahead of the event; its current post-event tally is 2,190. The organizer says the day reached 891 Canadian communities and 45 countries, with 213 special guests.
What happened on National Canadian Film Day 2026?
Presented by REEL CANADA, the 2026 edition used the theme “Let’s Dream Together.” The organizer’s March 31 announcement promoted the event with the line, “National Canadian Film Day. April 15th. Free movies. Everywhere. For everyone.” Its toolkit described screenings in theatres, community halls and classrooms, as well as home viewing supported by broadcasters and streaming services.
The announcement’s 2,000 figure was a pre-event estimate. REEL CANADA’s homepage now reports 2,190 screenings. The organizer also reports 213 special guests, activity in 891 Canadian communities and participation in 45 countries. These are organizer-reported figures; the sources do not describe them as independently audited. Before the event, REEL CANADA expected more than two million home viewers. Its current homepage describes home audiences as “Millions of Canadians” but does not give a more precise final count.
How could people take part?
Attend a local screening
Free in-person screenings took place in different kinds of venues, but access details depended on the individual listing. For example, the Canadian Film Institute listed Bon Cop, Bad Cop at Ottawa’s ByTowne Cinema as free and first-come, first-served, with a pre-recorded Q&A featuring Colm Feore. That was one local event, not a universal admission policy.
