Nadia Bartel said Ben Cousins brought the same hard-working approach to the dance floor that helped make him a football star. In a June 2024 interview ahead of the Australian season of Dancing with the Stars, Bartel also described the demanding training and the challenge of learning to dance with little prior experience.
Why Nadia Bartel joined the competition
Bartel said she had not danced as a child and did not consider herself coordinated. She joined the 2024 season to try something outside her comfort zone, explaining: “This year all the timing was right and I just thought it’d be nice to try something that was very much out of my comfort zone, because I’d never even done dance as a kid or child, and I’m not that coordinated.”

She was paired with returning professional dancer Lyu Masuda. Bartel described being put straight to work with a partner: “They do absolutely throw you in because you’re basically forced into a room with your dance partner, and just told to go and figure it out and learn,” she told PerthNow.
What Bartel said about the training
Bartel said rehearsals were intense to fit around her other work and family responsibilities. She described the dancers’ schedules as long, saying: “They’re so active and hours are so long sometimes, you’re training for 10 hours a day.” That figure is her account of training on the show, not a measured average for dancers generally.

The Cha Cha was a particular challenge
She singled out the Cha Cha as difficult: “The Cha Cha was so hard for me.” Bartel also spoke about struggling with the movement, saying: “It’s really hard for me to get my hips to move in the right way. I think that just might be from pregnancies.”
Why Bartel praised Ben Cousins
Bartel praised Cousins’s presence and the effort he brought to the competition. “Ben was amazing. He was such a great vibe to have around,” she said. She connected his approach on stage with his football career: “You can see how, obviously, all the hard work that he put into becoming such a big footy star, he definitely took that onto the stage as well.”

Her comments framed Cousins’s work ethic as visible in the way he approached the show, while her own account highlighted how steep the learning curve could be for a contestant new to dance.
