The Saturday, July 12, 2025, NYT Strands theme is “In the ballpark.” Its seven-letter spangram is STADIUM; the six other answers are HELMET, JUMBOTRON, BULLPEN, PEANUTS, PITCHER and GLOVE.

Hints for Strands #496

If you want a nudge before seeing the full answer list, the theme is “In the ballpark”: think of baseball and the things associated with a game at a stadium. Forbes columnist Paul Tassi also offered “Home run” as a secondary hint; that is his hint, not an official NYT clue. Forbes and TechRadar give the theme as “In the ballpark.”

In-game hint words

TechRadar lists these words for unlocking in-game hints: DOLE, CLUE, ANGER, STUN, PLUMP and BUNCH. In Strands, finding three non-theme words earns a hint that reveals letters in a theme answer, according to Parade’s rules summary.

Forbes and TechRadar both give PEANUTS. Parade lists PEANUT, so the published answer lists disagree on that word; without a direct inspection of the original board, the two-source match is the stronger answer-list evidence. Parade also describes the spangram’s position as “mostly horizontal.” TechRadar says it touches the left edge at row five and the right edge at row four.

How the puzzle works

Strands uses a six-by-eight letter grid. Find words connected to the theme: theme answers highlight blue, while the spangram highlights yellow. The spangram expresses the link among the theme answers and runs from one side of the board to the opposite side. Theme words fill the board without overlapping, according to Parade. Strands is available on the NYT Games site on desktop and mobile, according to TechRadar.

What to know about this puzzle’s theme

The answer set mixes objects and baseball-related terms, including a helmet, a jumbotron, a bullpen, peanuts, a pitcher and a glove. Tassi criticized the theme as broad, arguing that some entries are generic baseball terms rather than things specifically found in a stadium; that is his assessment, not an official NYT explanation. Forbes quotes the Times describing the range of possible Strands themes: “Some themes are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They may also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones.”

The date and game number identify this as NYT Strands #496, the Saturday, July 12, 2025 puzzle. The July 2025 archive identifies the theme as “In the ballpark” and records six theme words and a seven-letter spangram.
