NYT Strands game #178, dated Wednesday, August 28, 2024, has the theme “Commuter benefits.” Its five theme words are FERRY, TRAIN, STREETCAR, MONORAIL and SUBWAY; the spangram is PUBLIC TRANSPORT. Use the progressive clues below to stop before the full reveal if you want to solve it yourself.

  2. Gentler clue: Get around without a car.
  3. Spangram clue: Mass transit.
  4. First letters: The six answers begin FE, TR, ST, PU, MO and SU.
  5. Spangram placement: TechRadar reports that it starts at the left edge of row 6 and ends at the right edge of row 5.

Why the theme points to transit

“Commuter benefits” could sound like a reference to workplace perks, but this puzzle uses the phrase to point toward ways to travel. Each theme word names a public-transport mode, and PUBLIC TRANSPORT ties the group together.
