Hints for the January 4 Strands puzzle

Theme clue

The theme is “I just know . . .”. Forbes offers the clue, “You might want to have your fortune told, or speak with one of the departed,” and adds the pop-culture hint “I see dead people.” Parade’s alternate hint is “Professor X.”

First-letter prompts

The five theme words begin with PS, TE, ME, OR and CL. The spangram begins with SI. Parade describes its route across the board as mostly diagonal.

Spoiler: the spangram and answers

Spangram: SIXTH SENSE (shown as SIXTHSENSE in the grid).

Theme words: PSYCHIC, TELEPATH, MEDIUM, ORACLE and CLAIRVOYANT.

These answers are listed by both Forbes and Parade for puzzle #672. The terms point to supposed extrasensory abilities: a psychic or clairvoyant is said to perceive beyond ordinary senses, a telepath to read or communicate thoughts, a medium to communicate with the dead, and an oracle to provide prophetic insight.

How Strands hints work

Parade reproduces the NYT’s gameplay description: players drag or tap letters to form words, theme words stay highlighted in blue, and the spangram describes the theme, connects two opposite sides of the board, and is highlighted in yellow. The spangram can consist of two words. Finding three non-theme words earns an in-game hint that reveals the letters of a theme word; if a hint is already active, it shows the letter order instead.
