NYT Pips is a domino-based logic puzzle: place the tiles on the board so the values in each colored region meet the condition shown there. This guide explains the stable rules, but it does not give a date-specific Sunday hint or answer; the Sunday board must be checked in NYT Games before publishing any solution.
What is NYT Pips?
Pips is a New York Times Games puzzle built around dominoes. It was reported as a new daily NYT game on August 18, 2025, by TechRadar. The concept draws on familiar domino tiles while adding a logic-puzzle objective. Jonathan Knight, head of Games at The New York Times, described the idea as: “Dominoes evoke nostalgia for many people, and we leaned into that comfort while adding our signature NYT Games human-crafted twist,” as quoted by InPublishing.
How do you play Pips?
Place the available dominoes onto the board, fitting them into its spaces. The goal is not to match tile ends as in many traditional domino games. Instead, the values occupying each marked colored region must satisfy the condition printed for that region. Tom’s Guide’s launch guide describes examples of these conditions.
- Inspect each colored region and read its displayed condition.
- Work out which values can go in that region while satisfying the condition.
- Place dominoes so their two halves cover the board spaces and the region requirements remain satisfied.
- Use the remaining open spaces and conditions to check and refine your placement.
What do the region conditions mean?
Conditions can ask for an arithmetic total, require equal values, or impose an inequality. The rules depend on the condition shown in each region, and a given puzzle need not use every type. Read the board itself rather than assuming a fixed set of requirements.

Does Sunday Pips have a particular answer?
Yes, each board has its own arrangement and conditions, but no specific Sunday date is identified here. Without checking the intended Sunday board, a hint or answer cannot be stated reliably. What difficulty levels does Pips use?
Published guides describe Easy, Medium, and Hard levels. The difficulty and board details for any particular Sunday should be confirmed on that date’s puzzle rather than inferred from the weekday or from another board.

Do you need physical dominoes to play?
No. A standard domino set is optional and is not required to access or solve the digital NYT puzzle. Physical tiles may be useful for experimenting offline, but they do not provide the online board or its solution.
