How the puzzle works

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four. The groups are color-coded; a 2025 Forbes guide describes yellow as usually easiest, green and blue as intermediate, and purple as often the most difficult, frequently relying on wordplay. That guide also describes selecting and submitting four words, a four-mistake limit, a possible “one word away” warning for near-matches, and the option to shuffle the board. These are descriptions from a 2025 secondary guide, not a current verification of game mechanics. Forbes and TechRadar reported that the game could be played on NYT’s website or through its Games app.

Sources and date context

Forbes, TechRadar, and Parade all report these same four groups for the March 27, 2025 puzzle. Forbes published its guide on March 26 and noted that it corrected an initial mismatch; the corrected word list and answers agree with the other two guides. The puzzle is historical, not a statement of the current daily board.

Forbes also reported in March 2025 that an NYT All Access or Games subscription provided access to the Connections archive. That is a dated report; check NYT’s current plan terms for present-day archive eligibility.
