Work through these clues from the easiest group to the trickiest, following the game’s color order:
- Yellow: “Rocky Mountain High.”
- Green: “Upper Midwest division.”
- Blue: “Speed demons.”
- Purple: “Leading the team.”
Category labels
If you want a more direct nudge before seeing the words, the four categories are:

How Connections: Sports Edition works
Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on shared themes. The New York Times Help Center describes the four color-coded groups as ranging from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the trickiest. Sports Edition is the sports version of Connections, brought to solvers by The Athletic.
The official Help Center lists nytimes.com/games, nytimes.com/theathletic, The Athletic app, and the NYT News app as access points. It also says Sports Edition does not have an archive, so this dated answer key may be useful if you are looking for a past board.
