Did McGee become director of NCIS?

Why didn’t McGee get the Deputy Director job?
That was a separate, earlier question. In May 2025, after LaRoche stepped down, showrunner Steven D. Binder said McGee had wanted LaRoche’s Deputy Director position, but left open whether the job was actually available and whether McGee still wanted it. Binder described it as a question the story would explore, not a confirmed appointment. TVLine’s interview with Binder addressed that uncertainty.

What is McGee’s rank now?
CBS currently identifies McGee as a senior agent. That fits the character’s long progression from rookie to experienced member of the team. In a 2018 Television Academy profile, actor Sean Murray reflected on that change: “From the beginning, as a kind of inept, rookie agent to now, there’s been quite an evolution there.” He also said he did not want McGee to “eternally be the rookie.”
What happens to McGee and Mateo after the finale?
The Season 24 story gives McGee a newly revealed son, Mateo, and leaves their relationship under strain after Mateo’s involvement in a shooting and document-forging events. Binder told TV Insider, “We will pick that storyline up. There are consequences for Mateo.” He said the consequences would continue the story and create a new dynamic for McGee, but did not disclose how the legal or family conflict would end.

That makes fatherhood—not a confirmed promotion—the clearest stated pressure point in McGee’s near-term story. The show has set up consequences and relationship work, but has not established their eventual resolution.
What Sean Murray has said about McGee’s future
Murray described McGee as someone who likes to plan and keep different parts of life compartmentalized. On the official NCIS podcast Partners & Probies, as reported by CinemaBlend on June 2, 2026, he said: “We’re putting McGee through the ringer a little bit in terms of stuff and, you know, one of the things that I’ve always felt is McGee has always kind of planned his life in a certain kind of way and needs things kind of compartmentalized.”

That is Murray’s perspective on what makes the character interesting to play, not confirmation of a promotion, departure, or final outcome. The contrast between McGee’s orderly instincts and the disruptions around him helps explain why the Mateo storyline can test him in a way a simple career step would not.
