The ship gives the finale a contained procedural problem: identify what happened and survive the danger before the setting itself becomes a threat. That physical peril supplies momentum, while the investigation remains connected to the season’s larger character questions rather than standing entirely apart from them.
Does Knight leave NCIS?
No departure is confirmed in the finale. Vance offers Knight the chief of REACT Training Officer position, a role she had previously applied for, and Knight accepts. TheWrap reports the acceptance; TV Insider notes the possibility that the job could move her away from her current team. The episode therefore ends on a consequential decision, not an established series exit.

That distinction is the finale’s central source of tension. A promotion can represent professional growth while also changing the day-to-day bonds that define Knight’s place on the team. The acceptance makes those stakes immediate, but the available reporting does not establish what the choice ultimately means for her continuing role on the show.
How the case and cliffhanger work together
Procedural danger with a personal consequence
The shipboard murder investigation and the trapped-agent scenario give the hour a clear external problem to resolve. The underwater rescue element raises the physical stakes, while Knight’s offer shifts attention from survival to what comes next. That pairing gives the finale a useful change of scale: the case tests the agents in the present, and the job decision unsettles the team’s future.
Rank #2
A finale that leaves doors open
The episode provides a concrete case premise but also preserves unresolved character threads. TheWrap reports that it sets up the mystery surrounding Parker’s friend Lily for Season 22. Alongside Knight’s acceptance, that thread makes the ending point forward rather than closing every story line. The trade-off is deliberate ambiguity: viewers get a meaningful turning point, but not a definitive answer about the team’s eventual shape.
