Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premiered on Paramount+ on January 15, 2026, and early coverage quickly described its reception as review bombing. The clearest evidence is a sharp gap between critic and audience scores in launch-period snapshots. That gap documents a divided reception; by itself, it does not prove coordinated ratings or establish why viewers rated the series as they did.
What happened when Starfleet Academy premiered?
The first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, a Paramount+ original, debuted January 15, 2026. The show’s launch drew attention to a pronounced split between its Rotten Tomatoes critic and audience scores. Collider coverage indexed by IMDb called the response review bombing, but the score figures are evidence of a difference in reception—not proof of organized manipulation.

Rotten Tomatoes separates these measures: critic reviews contribute to the Tomatometer, while user ratings and reviews contribute to the Popcornmeter. They are different pools, so their percentages should not be treated as two measurements of the same group. Rotten Tomatoes explains the distinction on its About page.
How did the reported scores change?
The percentages below are dated snapshots, not a single, directly comparable set of scores. The critic and audience figures come from separate rating pools, and the available reports do not provide matching review or rating counts for the early audience figures.

| Snapshot date | Critics | Audience | What the source reports |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 16, 2026 | 85% | 35% | Collider report by Jake Hodges, surfaced through IMDb indexing. View the indexed article. |
| January 26, 2026 | 85% | 43% | Collider’s later report said the audience score had risen from 35% to 43% over five days. View the indexed article listing. |
| October 8, 2026 | 84% | Not stated in the cited snapshot | Rotten Tomatoes’ season page showed 63 critic reviews: 53 fresh and 10 rotten, with a 6.50/10 average among rated reviews. View the season page. |
The October figure is the value surfaced on the season page on October 8, 2026; Rotten Tomatoes scores can change. It should not be read as a continuation of the launch-period audience figures, which came from earlier reports and a different metric.
Does the score split prove review bombing?
No. “Review bombing” is how early coverage characterized the response, but the available score snapshots and Rotten Tomatoes’ explanation of its metrics do not establish coordinated ratings, identify who submitted ratings, or show what motivated them. A gap between critics and users can show disagreement between the groups represented in those pools; it cannot, on its own, explain the disagreement.

The early audience percentages also are not a survey of all Star Trek fans. The cited reporting does not supply evidence that ratings were coordinated or representative of the wider audience. The most precise description is that the series faced a sharp, widely reported critic-audience split, while claims about the cause remain unverified by these figures.
What did critics say about the series?
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus on the season page reads: “Injecting a heavy dose of hormones and humor into the Star Trek universe, Starfleet Academy marks a refreshing tonal shift that proves this franchise still has plenty of new thematic territory to explore.” This is the aggregator’s summary of critics’ reviews, not a quotation from a named critic or an explanation for audience ratings.
