Meryl Streep is part of the cast of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, and the Associated Press reports that she will voice Aslan. That does not confirm that the character will be portrayed as female: Netflix has not assigned Streep a role in its cast announcement, and neither Netflix nor Gerwig has confirmed a gender change.
Is Meryl Streep playing Aslan?
The Associated Press reported on October 4, 2026, that Streep will voice Aslan. Netflix’s September 22 cast announcement lists Streep but does not name her character. The distinction matters: the reported casting identifies the performer, but does not establish how the film will portray Aslan.
In C. S. Lewis’s books, Aslan is a male lion. The Guardian also reported that Gerwig had not confirmed that the film’s Aslan would be female. The available reports therefore support saying Streep is expected to voice Aslan, not that Netflix has confirmed a gender-swapped character.
What is confirmed about the new Narnia film?
It adapts The Magician’s Nephew
Gerwig wrote and directs Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which Netflix describes as the first adaptation of Lewis’s novel. Published in 1955, the book follows Digory and Polly as they encounter other worlds and witness the creation of Narnia. Its story precedes the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The announced cast and creative team
Netflix identifies David McKenna as Digory, Beatrice Campbell as Polly, Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew and Emma Mackey as Jadis. The announced cast also includes Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Meryl Streep, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma; Netflix’s announcement does not assign roles to all of them.
Netflix says Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt are composing the original score, with George Drakoulias as music supervisor. Gerwig described her childhood fascination with “the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life” in Netflix’s announcement.

Why has the casting prompted debate?
Aslan is widely read as a literary representation of Jesus Christ, a context that helps explain why some religious commentators have responded strongly to the casting. The AP reported objections from some conservative Christian commentators on theological grounds, alongside calls from some Lewis scholars and readers to wait for the film before judging its portrayal. These reactions do not represent a consensus among Christians, scholars or Narnia readers.
The actor’s sex and the character’s depiction are separate questions. Gerwig’s reported casting criteria, quoted by the AP, included wanting an actor “who was profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness,” and someone older than 70 who could convey wisdom as well as “fresh wonder.” Those comments describe the qualities she sought in a performer; they do not announce a change to Aslan’s gender.

What has Gerwig said about the film’s musical approach?
In an Empire interview reported by TheWrap, Gerwig called Narnia “literally a world made out of music” and said “rock ’n’ roll to me felt like a world made out of music.” That points to a music-centered creative idea, but it is not an official Netflix genre label or confirmation of a particular soundtrack style.
