Spoilers for Season 3 of The Diplomat. Season 3’s biggest excess is cumulative escalation: it pushes Kate and Hal through another rupture-and-reconciliation cycle while turning the U.S.–U.K. crisis into a high-stakes cliffhanger about the Poseidon weapon. The result is gripping political soap, but the twists begin to outpace the emotional and strategic credibility that makes the show compelling.
The season’s two splits keep escalating at once
Netflix’s official recap calls Season 3 “the split.” Kate and Hal’s marriage fractures, and the U.S.–U.K. relationship deteriorates alongside it. The parallel gives the season a clean dramatic design: private distrust and public distrust keep echoing one another. But when both tracks are repeatedly pushed toward rupture, reconciliation, and a still larger betrayal, escalation itself becomes the season’s dominant move.
That structure is also the source of the show’s energy. Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn says, “Season 3 flips the chessboard.” The surprise appointment of Hal as vice president instead of Kate makes good on that promise early, forcing Kate to decide what she wants beyond the political partnership she expected. TIME attributes the appointment to Cahn’s account of the season’s direction.
Kate and Hal’s relationship becomes a recurring engine
Kate stays in London after Hal’s appointment, explores a relationship with Callum, and eventually asks Hal to take her back. Those choices give Kate room to confront her own part in the couple’s recurring dynamics. Cahn has described the Callum relationship as a way for Kate to examine that role, rather than simply as another romantic detour.

Still, the cycle can feel overworked: separation, a new attachment, renewed longing, then another test of loyalty. The personal storyline deepens the political one when Kate’s judgment and private desires shape her public choices. It crowds that story when the latest romantic reversal feels like another turn of the same screw, rather than a consequence that changes what the characters can do next.
The Poseidon cliffhanger is where escalation risks credibility
In the finale, Kate believes the Poseidon weapon is missing and concludes that Hal and President Grace Penn took it. That is Kate’s inference, not a complete account of what happened or proof of the pair’s motives. Netflix’s recap leaves the season on that suspicion, with the next consequences unresolved.

TV Guide describes the apparent strategic logic as an attempt to bury the submarine and conceal what happened, while warning that exposure could trigger international conflict. Cahn says the move could anger both Russia and the U.K. The danger is enormous by design, but it also asks viewers to accept a chain of secrecy and risk before the show has fully established what the characters did and why.
That is the major way Season 3 goes too far: not because a political thriller must stay small, but because betrayals, romantic reversals, and strategic gambits arrive so densely that the story sometimes asks surprise to do the work of earned consequence. A cliffhanger can make viewers eager for an answer; it cannot, by itself, make the preceding choices feel inevitable.

It still works as heightened political soap
The counterargument is substantial. The Guardian’s Hannah J Davies praises the performances, tense action, and erudite script, while arguing that the drama depends on viewers suspending disbelief. Her review says that close scrutiny of the finale can make the story crumble, but that it succeeds as “spicy geopolitical soap.” The headline calls it “a ludicrous treat,” and the standfirst urges readers to “Suspend your disbelief and, wow, this high-stakes drama is good.” Those are two reasonable ways to describe the same appeal: plausibility may wobble while pace and performance keep the ride entertaining.
The season runs eight episodes; Rotten Tomatoes lists October 16, 2025, as the air date for each. In that compact space, the show delivers reversals quickly and keeps its central couple at the heart of the crisis. If heightened plotting is the point, the scale is part of the pleasure. If the pleasure depends on political choices feeling earned, the same scale becomes a credibility threshold the finale strains.

What the season’s excess means for the ending
Season 3 does not settle whether Hal and Grace took Poseidon, nor does it show the full consequences of Kate’s suspicion. It leaves viewers with a charged possibility: the people nearest to her may have crossed a line that could endanger more than their marriage or careers. That is an effective hook, but its payoff will depend on whether the story turns the cliffhanger into comprehensible motives and consequences, rather than simply another escalation.
For now, the clearest judgment is that the season’s audacity is both its strength and its weakness. The Diplomat remains brisk, performed with conviction, and willing to spring a surprise. But by stacking intimate and geopolitical crises on top of one another, Season 3 sometimes goes past tension into overreach.
