Netflix planned to spend around $18 billion in cash on content in 2025, up from $16.2 billion in 2024. The figure was a plan announced in March 2025—not a reported final outlay or a multi-year commitment. Netflix CFO Spencer Neumann said the company was “not anywhere near a ceiling,” but he did not attach a numerical limit or timetable to that remark.
What Netflix said it planned to spend
In a March 7, 2025 report, The Verge said Netflix planned around $18 billion in cash content spending for 2025, compared with $16.2 billion in 2024. The report characterized the planned increase as roughly 11 percent year over year.

These figures describe cash spending, not content expense recognized under accounting rules. The report did not provide a reconciliation between the two measures, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
What “not anywhere near a ceiling” meant
Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Tech, Media, and Telecom Conference, Netflix CFO Spencer Neumann said, “We are not anywhere near a ceiling.” He also said, “I think we are still just getting started.” The remarks express management’s view of the company’s room to grow; neither statement sets a spending cap, a future budget, or a quantified growth target. The Verge reported the conference remarks and attributed its conference coverage to Variety.

Neumann described Netflix’s aim as staying in growth mode rather than shifting to maintenance mode, and said the company wanted to provide more entertainment value per dollar. Those are stated goals, not evidence that increased spending will necessarily improve content quality, retention, or revenue.
Why live programming featured in the report
The Verge placed the spending plan alongside Netflix’s broadening slate, including WWE’s Monday Night Raw, John Mulaney’s late-night show, and a planned boxing match between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano. These examples show the range of programming discussed in connection with Netflix’s ambitions. The report did not say how much of the planned $18 billion would go to live events, or provide a breakdown by type of content.

What the $18 billion figure does—and does not—tell you
- It was a forecast for 2025: the March 2025 report described planned cash spending, not Netflix’s confirmed final total for that year.
- It was not a 2026 budget: Neumann’s conference remarks did not establish a later-year spending figure or a binding multi-year commitment.
- It does not show the allocation: the report did not quantify the portions devoted to live events, films, series, or other content.
- It does not establish results: the cited material does not show whether the planned increase led to improved audience, revenue, or retention outcomes.
