Blood & Gold resembles Inglourious Basterds in its pulpy WWII revenge-film style: tense encounters give way to abrupt, graphic violence. The resemblance is about tone and cinematic approach, not a shared plot or an identical treatment of history. Peter Thorwarth’s 2023 German action drama instead builds its story around a deserter, a farmer and an SS troop hunting hidden gold in the final days of World War II.
What Blood & Gold is about
Set in spring 1945, the film follows Heinrich, a German deserter desperate to get back to his daughter. An SS troop catches him and leaves him hanging, but farmer Elsa rescues and hides him. The soldiers are searching a nearby village for gold hidden by a Jewish family, drawing Heinrich and Elsa into the confrontation. Netflix’s official synopsis frames the story around the deserter’s attempt to return home and the SS mission to uncover the gold.
Peter Thorwarth directed the film and Stefan Barth wrote it. The principal cast includes Robert Maaser, Marie Hacke and Alexander Scheer, according to Netflix’s German-market title listing.
Why it brings Inglourious Basterds to mind
Tension followed by sudden violence
The closest resemblance is the rhythm: scenes build tension around dangerous encounters, then release it in stylized, violent bursts. Netflix Tudum describes Blood & Gold as a “neo-spaghetti Western war movie” with hyper-violence and gore that echo stylistic predecessors such as Inglourious Basterds (Netflix Tudum, May 26, 2023). Tagesspiegel’s review, also published May 26, 2023, singles out farmhouse tension and the sudden eruption of violence as a recognizable parallel (Tagesspiegel).

A revenge-film mode, not a shared story
Both films use a heightened, pulpy mode of WWII revenge action rather than presenting themselves as restrained historical dramas. But their story engines differ: Blood & Gold centers on a village gold hunt and the people caught in it, while Inglourious Basterds has interlocking revenge and assassination plots. The comparison is useful for setting expectations about tone and violence; it does not mean the films share a plot or the same historical approach.
