Conceived as a television program to pitch to major networks, it was shelved and not revived during Zappa’s lifetime. The film and its soundtrack were released in 2025 in several physical formats.
Why the 1974 concert was never broadcast
Zappa arranged the television production with the intention of shopping it to major networks. The plan was shelved, and he did not revisit the project during his lifetime. The official release account does not specify why the plan fell through or identify a network that considered it.

The film was directed for release by Ahmet Zappa. Frank Zappa, Ahmet Zappa, and vaultmeister Joe Travers are credited as producers. Its title, Cheaper Than Cheep, plays on Zappa’s song “Cheepnis,” the charm of low-budget 1950s monster movies, and the production’s shoestring budget. Zappa’s announcement describes the project and its origins.
What was released
The release pairs the concert video with audio versions of the performance, but the contents vary by format. The official store lists a two-hour concert program on Blu-ray, with Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround, and stereo audio, alongside a stereo soundtrack on CD. Its standalone vinyl listing is a soundtrack rather than a video edition.
