The headline refers to DAHMER — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Netflix’s 10-episode, TV-MA limited series about the murders of 17 teenage boys and young men. Released on Sept. 21, 2022, it drew substantial attention, but “most controversial” is an opinionated label rather than a measured ranking, and the available figures do not establish how many people are watching in 2026.
Which Netflix series is the headline about?
It is DAHMER — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan and starring Evan Peters. Netflix classifies it as a TV-MA series with 10 episodes. Its subject is Jeffrey Dahmer’s murders of 17 teenage boys and young men. Netflix’s title page describes the series and asks, “How did he evade arrest for so long?”—a promotional framing of the story, not a neutral conclusion about the causes of the crimes. Although the headline calls it a thriller, Netflix and its official coverage identify it as a series and a limited drama series. “True-crime drama” is a more precise description.
Why did the series draw controversy?
The central dispute is about dramatizing real murders and the consequences that retelling them may have for victims’ families and communities. A secondary report summarized objections that relatives were not consulted and that seeing loved ones’ stories dramatized could be retraumatizing. That criticism should be attributed to the report; it does not establish that every family member shared the same view, and no direct statement from a victim’s relative is verified here. The production team described a different intention: to place the victims and affected communities in view and examine systemic racism and institutional failures that enabled Dahmer’s crimes. Producer Rashad Robinson told Netflix that the series sought to show the murdered people’s humanity and understand their deaths “not as unfortunate, but as unjust.” This is Robinson’s account of the production’s approach, not independent proof of how effectively the series achieved it. Evan Peters likewise told Netflix, “It felt important to be respectful to the victims, to the victims’ families.” That statement records the actor’s stated intention; it does not resolve the separate question of how relatives experienced the dramatization. Netflix’s cast coverage

What do the viewing figures show?
Netflix’s published milestones show that the series had a large audience in 2022. They are historical platform measurements, not evidence of current viewing or of a lasting psychological effect on viewers.
- In its Sept. 27, 2022 weekly report, Netflix said the series received 196.2 million hours viewed during the week of Sept. 19 and entered the Top 10 in 92 countries. Netflix’s Sept. 27 report
- On Dec. 5, 2022, Netflix reported that the title had passed one billion viewing hours within 60 days, spent seven weeks in the Global Top 10, and reached the Top 10 in 92 countries. Netflix’s Dec. 5 announcement
These figures support the claim that the show attracted exceptional attention after launch. They do not confirm a current 2026 ranking or viewing total, and they cannot establish that it is Netflix’s “most controversial” title: the cited material supplies no definition or comparative measure for that superlative.

Is it still haunting viewers years later?
“Still haunting viewers” is rhetorical language, not a measurable finding in Netflix’s audience reports. The documented evidence establishes major reach in 2022; it does not show how many people are watching now or establish a psychological effect. Viewers deciding whether to watch should also consider that the series dramatizes murders of real people and that its treatment drew criticism related to families and affected communities.
