Netflix’s planned live-action Dungeons & Dragons series set in The Forgotten Realms is reported to have been abandoned. The project was announced in February 2025 as being in development, but no formal series order had been confirmed by the end of that year. A September 2026 report, citing Deadline, says Netflix moved on to a separate live-action D&D project, Ravenloft. That makes “fantasy event of the decade” an unsupported description: the Forgotten Realms series was never reported as a released show.
What happened to Netflix’s Forgotten Realms series?
In February 2025, trade reports said Netflix was developing a live-action adaptation of The Forgotten Realms, a setting from the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Drew Crevello was attached as writer and showrunner, with Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Hasbro Entertainment named among the executive producers. The announcement was about a project in development, not a series Netflix had ordered for production. Variety’s February 2025 report and Deadline’s February 2025 report describe the initial development news.
On September 7, 2026, Unification France reported, citing Deadline, that Netflix had abandoned the Forgotten Realms project and was developing a separate D&D series based on Ravenloft. This status is attributed to that reporting; it is not presented here as a direct Netflix announcement. Unification France’s report is the cited source for the update.
Why “fantasy event of the decade” does not fit
The phrase promises an achievement the public record does not establish. There was no released Forgotten Realms series in the reporting, no reported audience or critical performance, and no evidence to compare it with other fantasy releases. The project’s development announcement showed that Netflix was exploring an adaptation, not that a major television event was guaranteed.

A December 30, 2025 preview from What’s on Netflix noted that no official progress had been reported since the February news and that no formal series order had been made. It also quoted Levy on the creative difficulty: “the reason why it’s a hard process is you are not adapting story IP, but a world and a lexicon. But the story has to be built from scratch within that world.” That distinction helps explain the challenge: adapting a setting and its vocabulary still requires constructing a particular story for television. The preview predates the later cancellation report. Read the December 2025 preview.
How this project differs from other D&D screen projects
| Project | Platform or format | Reported status | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix’s The Forgotten Realms | Planned live-action series | Reported abandoned in September 2026; initially in development, with no formal order confirmed in the December 2025 preview. | A proposed adaptation of the Forgotten Realms setting; separate from the later Ravenloft project. |
| Earlier Paramount+ D&D television effort | Television series for Paramount+ | Did not move forward. | A prior iteration, reported as distinct from Netflix’s Forgotten Realms concept. The Hollywood Reporter’s February 2025 coverage discusses the earlier effort and the Netflix project. |
| Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves | Released film (2023) | Released. | A separate film, not the Netflix series. Variety’s report distinguishes the film from the Netflix project. |
| Ravenloft | Separate live-action D&D project | Reported in development in September 2026. | Reported as a new project after Netflix abandoned The Forgotten Realms; it is not the same series under a different name. Unification France’s report attributes the update to Deadline. |
What is known—and what is not
The reporting identifies an intended format, setting and some attached creatives for the Forgotten Realms project. It does not establish a production start, cast, episode count, release date or completed series. Nor does the available reporting establish that the Ravenloft project has a series order or release date. Those details should not be inferred from the fact that a project was in development.
