Neeraj Ghaywan has said that Geeli Pucchi began as an idea he and Masaan co-writer Varun Grover considered for that film, then set aside because it felt too heavy for a subplot. He later shaped it into a standalone story for Netflix’s anthology Ajeeb Daastaans. Its focus is the uneasy connection between Bharti, a Dalit factory worker, and Priya, a Brahmin data operator, and the caste, class and gender differences that frame their lives.
From a discarded Masaan subplot to a standalone story
In a 2021 interview with Scroll.in, Ghaywan traced the idea for Geeli Pucchi to his work on Masaan. He and co-writer Varun Grover had considered it as a subplot, but decided it carried too much weight for that film. Ghaywan later developed it on its own, with Netflix and Dharmatic Entertainment providing the opportunity to make it as an anthology segment.

That origin matters to the story’s scale: rather than serving as a brief strand within another film, the premise could center on two women and the pressures shaping their relationship.
Bharti and Priya: two worlds, one workplace
Konkona Sensharma plays Bharti, a Dalit factory worker; Aditi Rao Hydari plays Priya, a Brahmin data operator. Their different positions in the workplace and society are part of the story’s design, not incidental background. Ghaywan described the film as exploring caste, class and gender together, alongside the longing for emotional connection between women from very different worlds.
In Netflix’s 2 April 2021 announcement, Ghaywan put the premise this way: “Geeli Pucchi explores the intersectional realities of two women from disparate worlds.” The phrase is his account of the film’s intended focus, rather than a general conclusion about the experiences of Dalit or queer people.
How Ghaywan approached character research
Ghaywan has said that he brought queer and Dalit people into the process so they could contribute lived perspectives. He also gave Sensharma Yashica Dutt’s book Coming Out As Dalit to read while the actor was developing Bharti. These were elements of the character-development process he described in interviews; the book is a research reference, not an official film tie-in.
In a separate conversation with The Telegraph India, published on 15 April 2021, Ghaywan and Hydari discussed the anthology process and preparation for the characters. Together, the interviews offer the director’s account of how he developed the material and invited perspectives into that work; they are not independent production records.
Where Geeli Pucchi fits in Ajeeb Daastaans
Geeli Pucchi is one of four shorts in Ajeeb Daastaans, which Netflix announced for exclusive release on 16 April 2021. Netflix’s announcement credits Ghaywan as director and co-writer and lists Sensharma and Hydari among the cast. The anthology’s stories concern unexpected catalysts and fractured relationships, with Netflix’s synopsis identifying themes including jealousy, entitlement, prejudice, toxicity and moral uncertainty.
