What is Damsel about?
Elodie agrees to marry a prince, but the royal family has chosen her as the price of an ancient debt. Left in a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she has to rely on her own wits to survive. The trailer moves from the promise of royal courtship to the revelation that the marriage is a trap; Netflix’s synopsis describes the danger, not the eventual outcome.
The story turns the familiar expectation of a prince rescuing a heroine on its head. Brown told Netflix, “She’s a damsel who doesn’t need to be saved,” and, “She saves herself in many ways.” Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo described the film’s approach to the fantasy premise this way: “What I really loved in the script from Dan Mazeau was embracing the idea of a fantasy adventure and a princess and dragon story, but taking it into a place [where] it’s completely upside down.”
