Its latest shareholder letter points to early signals in kids’ profiles and cloud TV games, but does not disclose gaming revenue or measure how much games cause members to stay longer. The strategy is clear; its financial impact is not yet quantified in the cited disclosures.
Why Netflix sees games as part of its entertainment platform
In its Q1 2026 shareholder letter, Netflix described games as one way to broaden the entertainment choices it offers and win more “moments of truth” with members. The company said its audience was approaching one billion people, estimated that it accounted for about 5% of global TV viewing, and said it had reached less than 45% of its broadband-household total addressable market at the end of 2025. The scale gives Netflix a large potential audience for games, but it does not show how many members play. The company is treating games as an extension of its entertainment service and engagement strategy, rather than presenting them as a separately reported business with disclosed gaming revenue in the cited letter.
What Netflix says it is building
The Q1 2026 letter groups its game focus into four categories:

Netflix’s framing has evolved. At a September 2025 company conference, co-CEO Gregory Peters described a strategy spanning games connected to Netflix intellectual property, kids’ games, shared TV play and distribution of known titles. He estimated the consumer games market outside China and advertising at $140 billion; that is Peters’ estimate, not an independently verified market figure in the cited source. An earlier Q2 2024 shareholder letter said Grand Theft Auto had performed well on Netflix and that games based on Netflix properties were appealing, particularly when timed to a film or series launch. It also described Netflix Stories, interactive fiction tied to Netflix shows and films. Those examples explain an earlier version of the strategy; they should not be read as a current catalog list. What the early usage signals do—and do not—show
Netflix reported that about 10% of kids’ profiles had played its games. It also said nearly half of kids’ profiles viewed content on mobile devices and tablets. Both figures refer specifically to kids’ profiles, not all Netflix profiles, members or paying households. The company also described promising traction for cloud TV games and said its virtual controller app had recently topped the most-downloaded iOS app chart. Netflix Q1 2026 shareholder letter.
These signals indicate activity, but they do not establish the overall number of players, total game hours, or gaming revenue. Netflix said its data suggests gameplay can positively affect retention, but the letter gives no quantified effect and does not demonstrate how much of any retention change games cause.

Peters offered a similar company interpretation at the September 2025 conference: “What we see in terms of how it delivers the business is pretty much what you’d expect, which is increased engagement and increased retention.” That is his account of Netflix’s results, not a published causal measurement. How members can play: mobile versus TV games

For mobile play, check the requirements on the individual game rather than assuming every title runs on every supported device. For TV play, follow the controller instructions shown for the platform and game; the cited Help Center guidance does not support recommending a generic physical gamepad for this setup.

What Netflix still needs to prove
Netflix has outlined a plausible strategic logic: a service with a broad audience can use games to extend its stories, create shared entertainment and encourage more engagement. Its own disclosures offer initial usage signals, particularly among kids’ profiles and in cloud TV games. But scale and promising traction are not the same as demonstrated business impact.
- Adoption: the cited figures do not disclose total players or play hours.
- Financial contribution: the cited sources do not state a gaming revenue figure.
- Retention: Netflix expresses a positive view, but does not quantify the effect or establish a causal retention lift.
Until those outcomes are reported, Netflix’s gaming case is best understood as an engagement strategy supported by early company-reported signals—not as a separately quantified growth engine.
