The company’s latest cited viewing report, covering January through June 2026, repeats the member-level claim. Netflix has not publicly explained the precise viewing threshold or calculation in the cited reports.
What percentage of Netflix members watch anime?
Netflix’s first-half 2026 report says: “More than half of our members today have watched at least one anime title.” The report covers viewing from January through June 2026. Netflix does not say the share is exactly 50%; its claim is that it exceeds half. Netflix’s first-half 2026 viewing report

The company had made a similar statement about 2024: more than half of its global members had watched at least one anime title that year. Netflix shared that figure in its March 2025 AnimeJapan article. Netflix’s AnimeJapan 2025 announcement
Does that mean half of the world watches anime?
No. Netflix is describing its own members, not the world’s population. The claim cannot establish how many people globally watch anime, and it should not be recast as a percentage of households or regular anime fans.
#1 Best Overall
Netflix’s reports do not explain the denominator in detail, including how shared accounts or profiles are treated. They also do not state how much viewing qualifies as having watched a title. The claim therefore does not tell readers whether a member watched briefly or watches anime often.
How does Netflix’s anime audience claim compare with its other figures?
Netflix has published several anime-related numbers, but they describe different things. A member-reach claim is not interchangeable with viewing hours or title-level views.

| Figure | What it measures | Period and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than half of members watched at least one anime title | Member reach, as stated by Netflix | For 2024, reported in 2025; the first-half 2026 report repeats the claim for members “today.” The reports do not disclose a minimum viewing duration or calculation method. |
| Anime viewing tripled | Viewing hours, according to Netflix | Over the five years preceding Netflix’s 2025 statement, repeated in its January 2026 MAPPA announcement. The statements give no absolute starting or ending totals. |
| Anime was viewed over 1 billion times | Netflix’s wording is “times”; the cited announcement does not define the measure | 2024, reported by Netflix in July 2025. Do not treat this as a number of hours or unique viewers. |
| Three anime titles recorded 8 million views each | Title-level views; Netflix defines views in its viewing reports as total hours viewed divided by runtime | Each figure covers January through June 2026 and applies to BAKI-DOU: The Invincible Samurai Season 1, STEEL BALL RUN: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Cosmic Princess Kaguya! |
The five-year trend and 2024 figures are described in Netflix’s AnimeJapan 2025 article and its July 2025 Anime Expo announcement. Netflix repeated the tripling claim in its January 2026 MAPPA announcement. The three title-level view figures appear in the first-half 2026 report.

The clearest reading is that anime has broad reach among Netflix’s membership: the company says more than half its members have watched at least one title. Netflix also says anime viewing hours have grown over five years. These are company-reported figures; the cited statements do not provide the underlying calculations or enough detail to independently assess the methodology.

In a separate July 2025 statement, Netflix said 80–90% of its members watch dubbed anime. The cited passage does not specify the measurement method or period, so this should not be read as the share of all anime viewers who prefer dubbing. Netflix’s July 2025 anime announcement
