Netflix’s iHostage used a purpose-built, full-scale replica of Amsterdam’s Apple Store, built inside an old airplane hangar in Katwijk, South Holland. The physical set included the store and seven meters of sidewalk; a large LED wall supplied a digitally rebuilt view of the surrounding square.
Why the production built a replica
Filming inside the real Amsterdam Apple Store was not possible, so the production recreated it as a film set. Director Bobby Boermans described the scope in Netflix’s behind-the-scenes featurette: “We needed to re-create the entire store, plus seven meters of sidewalk outside on the square, along with the surrounding LED screens.” Netflix’s April 22, 2025 featurette shows the team discussing the build.
Where the set was built
The replica was constructed in an old airplane hangar in Katwijk, in South Holland. Boermans explained why the production chose an unusual location: “No studio in the Netherlands was big enough … We ended up in Katwijk [in South Holland], in an old airplane hangar.” The hangar gave the crew room for the full store, the exterior sidewalk section and the surrounding production setup.
How the physical set and LED environment worked together
The replica provided the store and sidewalk
The full-scale physical build supplied the controllable storefront and interior where the scenes could be staged. The replica was a movie set, not a functioning Apple Store. MacRumors’ account of the production also describes the interior replica on a soundstage surrounded by an LED wall.

The LED wall extended the scene beyond the glass
ReadySet Studios, which described its work on the project, says the replica was placed against a 60-meter LED wall displaying a scanned and digitally rebuilt Leidseplein, developed with Planet X and ReadySet Studios. MacRumors reports that the virtual surroundings could provide changing lighting, reflections and movement visible through the storefront’s glass façade. In practical terms, the physical build gave actors a real store environment, while the LED display supplied the square outside it.
ReadySet Studios also says a large part of the full-scale set was made with repurposed and previously used elements. Its project account is the source for the wall’s 60-meter measurement and the reuse detail.
