No verified record establishes that Neil Diamond paid $150 million in his divorce from Marcia Murphey. In a 2012 interview, Diamond said the widely reported figure was made up and “totally untrue.” He also spoke warmly of Murphey and said she had been well cared for—but that recollection does not confirm a specific settlement amount.
Was Neil Diamond’s divorce settlement $150 million?
The $150 million figure was widely repeated, but it should be treated as a disputed report, not a confirmed payment. RTTNews reported on December 9, 2012, that Diamond had rejected the figure in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. “That’s what the newspapers said but it wasn’t true. Somebody made up a number which was totally untrue,” he said. RTTNews’ account of Diamond’s correction records his denial; it is not a settlement document.
Diamond added: “I told my former wife, ‘Honey, I wish it were true. I’d love to give that to you.’ But musicians don’t make that kind of money.” His statement directly challenges the $150 million claim, but it does not disclose the actual legal terms or establish a final figure.
What is known about the settlement—and what is not?
Other coverage has offered a different estimate. In 2006, The Guardian reported a reputed settlement of around £75 million and said the couple did their sums by phone without lawyers. That is an attributed estimate, not independent financial documentation. The Guardian’s retrospective account does not establish the amount through a court record or settlement agreement.

A later Daily Telegraph interview excerpt reproduced by a fan site attributes to Diamond the claim that Murphey received his three houses and was well cared for. In the excerpt, he said: “She was just wonderful. She earned every penny. My career wouldn’t have been the same without her.” The page is a fan-site reproduction of the interview, and the original publication date is not established there. The remarks convey Diamond’s view of Murphey and the separation; they do not document the properties’ value or the complete settlement terms.
No settlement agreement, court record, or independently verified accounting in the available sources establishes a precise payout. That means neither the $150 million figure nor the alternative estimate can be presented as a confirmed transfer or used to call the divorce a verified record-setting settlement.

Why did the marriage end?
Diamond connected the breakup to the demands of his work and the time he gave the relationship. In a 1996 Los Angeles Times interview, he reflected: “Work has always been my drug of choice, so it’s pretty predictable what would eventually happen.” He also said, “I felt I was the one who set the tone for the relationship and the marriage and the amount of time we spent together.” The Los Angeles Times interview is a contemporaneous account of his reflections on the separation.
The couple married in 1969. The Los Angeles Times described the marriage as lasting 25 years and said it broke up in 1994; the newspaper also noted that Diamond was four or five months out of the marriage when interviewed in 1996. Later profiles describe the divorce or settlement as occurring in 1995. These accounts do not consistently distinguish the breakup, separation, filing, and formal divorce, so the dates should not be collapsed into a single event. Why the reported reaction stands out
The noteworthy part of Diamond’s response is not proof that he paid a particular sum. It is his reported combination of rejecting the sensational figure, expressing regret about his work-first habits, and speaking appreciatively of Murphey. In the later interview excerpt, he credited her role in his career and said she had earned what she received. Those are his reported characterizations—not independent confirmation of the settlement’s value or terms.

A 2024 Wealth Advisor headline stated the $150 million claim as fact, illustrating how the figure continues to circulate. But the reported 2012 correction from Diamond conflicts with that framing, while the other published estimate is also unverified. The Wealth Advisor article is evidence of the claim’s continued presentation, not proof of the amount.

The most supportable account is that $150 million was reported, Diamond later called it fabricated, and he described Murphey as well cared for. The exact settlement remains unverified in the sources cited here.
