Who was charged in Jonathan Joss’s killing?
A Bexar County grand jury indicted Joss’s neighbor, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, on a murder charge in November 2025. The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office described murder as “the most serious charge applicable to this crime under Texas law,” according to the Associated Press. An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction. The latest reviewed report said prosecutors and defense attorneys were reviewing evidence as the case moved toward trial. What do reports say happened?
KSAT reported details attributed to a San Antonio Police Department report. According to that account, Joss was at his property to check his mail. A witness told police that Alvarez parked behind Joss’s vehicle, argued with him, threatened to shoot him, and then shot him with a rifle. The police account said Joss was pronounced dead at the scene and that Alvarez told an officer, “I shot him.” These are reported accounts from police records, not findings established at trial. KSAT
What is the defense’s position?
Alvarez’s attorney, Nico LaHood, said in June 2025 that the defense believed self-defense applied. “People in Texas have a right not to be a victim,” LaHood told KSAT, adding that the law allows self-defense and the defense of third persons. What is the latest reported status of the case?
In a June 29, 2026 report, the San Antonio Express-News said Alvarez appeared for a status hearing in Bexar County’s 437th District Court. Prosecutors and defense attorneys were reviewing evidence, including testimony from neighborhood residents. The prosecutor said the materials included about 63 police reports; the report did not specify what incidents those reports covered or how they related to the case.
The Express-News reported that a return date of September 17, 2026, was set. The reviewed coverage does not establish whether that hearing occurred or whether the court later set another date. San Antonio Express-News

Was Jonathan Joss’s killing a hate crime?
That remains unresolved in the reviewed coverage. Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, alleged that the shooter shouted “violent homophobic slurs.” An attorney for Alvarez denied that Alvarez made homophobic statements. Police initially said there was no evidence indicating the shooting was related to Joss’s sexual orientation; Police Chief William McManus later called that statement “premature” and said the question was part of the investigation. The AP reported that, under Texas law, a hate-crime finding, if applicable and if there were a conviction, would be handled as a sentencing enhancement rather than as a separate charge. At a June 2025 news conference, Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said his office would keep open the possibility of alleging a hate-crime enhancement. What is known about neighborhood complaints?
The Express-News reported that its review found more than 70 complaints from neighbors in the years before the shooting. Neighbors had accused Joss of threats, property damage, and carrying weapons. Those allegations are background reported by the newspaper; they do not establish what happened during the fatal encounter, Alvarez’s guilt, or a motive. San Antonio Express-News
