Daryl Hannah alleged in an April 2025 BBC interview that the first Trump administration tried to disrupt Neil Young’s path to U.S. citizenship. Her account is an allegation, not an independently verified finding. Young had separately described a delay tied to his marijuana use, and news reports say he became a U.S. citizen in 2020.
What Daryl Hannah alleged
While promoting the documentary Neil Young: Coastal, Hannah told the BBC that the first Trump administration repeatedly required Young to return for citizenship interviews. As quoted by Yahoo News and Rolling Stone, she said: “They tried every trick in the book to mess him up, and made him keep coming back to be re-interviewed and re-interviewed.” She also said it was “ridiculous [because] he’s been living in America and paying taxes here since he was in his 20s.”
Those remarks were reported on April 16–17, 2025. They describe Hannah’s account of what happened; they do not by themselves establish that officials deliberately interfered with Young’s application.
What Neil Young said about the delay
Young gave a separate explanation in 2019. In a statement quoted by Fox News, he said he had passed a citizenship test but had been told he needed to take another one because of his marijuana use and concerns about problems exhibited by some marijuana users. His statement establishes what Young said he was told, not the administration’s motive.

What is known about the outcome
News reports published in April 2025 say Young became a U.S. citizen in 2020. The reporting available for this account did not include a primary government record confirming the naturalization date, so 2020 is best described as the date reported by news outlets.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The available reporting does not independently prove Hannah’s claim of intentional political interference.

Why the accounts should be kept distinct
- Hannah’s allegation: the administration made Young return for repeated interviews and tried to hinder his application.
- Young’s 2019 account: he said he was asked to take another test because of his marijuana use.
- Reported outcome: outlets say he became a U.S. citizen in 2020.
These points are not necessarily mutually exclusive: a reported procedural delay and Hannah’s allegation about its purpose are different claims. The public reporting cited here does not independently resolve whether political interference occurred.
