National Popcorn Day was January 19, 2026, and the offers below have expired. Cinemark and Regal announced promotions in the United States, while Cineplex’s offer applied in Canada. These were selected chain offers, not a complete list of every theater or local promotion.
Where could you get free popcorn?
Regal: free large popcorn in the United States
On January 19, Regal offered a free large popcorn to guests who wore a movie-themed costume and told a concessionist which movie or character they represented. The offer was tied to the costume and the in-person concession interaction; Regal did not describe it as a general free-popcorn giveaway. Its announcement also prohibited face-obscuring masks and hoods outside designated photo areas, face paint, and realistic prop weapons. Regal’s 2026 announcement included the terms.
Cineplex: free small popcorn in Canada
Cineplex offered a free small popcorn to Scene+ members with a valid movie ticket for a screening on January 16, 17, 18, or 19, 2026. Members had to visit concessions on the same day as their screening and scan their membership card. The offer therefore required both a ticket and Scene+ membership; it was not a walk-in freebie. See Cineplex’s announcement.
What did Cinemark offer?
A $5 bucket fill, not free popcorn
In the United States, Cinemark’s January 18–19 promotion let each guest bring one clean, sanitized bucket for a $5 fill of regular popcorn or kettle corn where available. Cinemark allowed buckets up to 400 ounces. Mobile ordering and third-party delivery were excluded, and the offer did not include free refills.

Cinemark said its promotion accepted the five-gallon blue bucket sold by Lowe’s, but that bucket was not food-safe for direct food contact. Guests using it had to use the food-grade liner supplied by Cinemark. The company’s offer announcement set out the bucket conditions.
Other Cinemark promotions
Cinemark also listed several limited-time promotions. They were distinct from the $5 bucket fill and did not guarantee that every guest would receive free popcorn.
