What is known about Naomi Judd’s death
The Associated Press reported on August 26, 2022, that an autopsy confirmed the cause and manner of Judd’s death, which her family had previously disclosed. The report said she died at her Tennessee home on April 30, 2022, aged 76. Read the Associated Press report via NY1.
Ashley Judd had publicly confirmed in May 2022 that her mother died by suicide. In an interview with Diane Sawyer, she said the family chose to disclose the manner of death rather than let it circulate without their control. She also emphasized her mother’s dignity and privacy. What the reports say about her mental health
The Judd family said Naomi was being treated for PTSD and bipolar disorder. The Associated Press reproduced the family’s statement: “She was treated for PTSD and bipolar disorder, to which millions of Americans can relate.” The statement identifies what the family said about her treatment; it should not be read as an explanation of why she died.

A Guardian report dated August 27, 2022, said the medical examiner’s report described a “significant” history of anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, based on information from her family. The Guardian also reported the family’s reference to PTSD and bipolar disorder. This is reported history, not an independent clinical assessment. Naomi Judd performed with her daughter Wynonna as the country duo The Judds. The duo’s official history says they released six studio albums and sold more than 20 million records. A book about her earlier experience with depression
River of Time: My Descent into Depression and How I Emerged with Hope, written by Naomi Judd and Marcia Wilkie, was published in 2016. It offers context about Judd’s earlier experience with depression, but it predates her death by several years and is not an account of its circumstances.
