Naomi Campbell’s stated reason for joining Victoria’s Secret’s 2023 World Tour was the chance to bring emerging creatives into the project and give them a platform. Her earlier remark that the brand “could not afford me” referred to why she never became an Angel—not why she later took part in the World Tour.
What Campbell said motivated her to take part
In a 2023 interview with Vogue, Campbell described the World Tour as more than a modeling job. She said she had explained her work and goals to Victoria’s Secret creative director Raúl Martinez and his team, and that they incorporated her ideas. She called it “a collaboration of everyone’s efforts,” emphasizing the inclusion of young creatives who otherwise might not have received the same platform or opportunity.
The project’s format helps explain that emphasis. The Associated Press described the 2023 World Tour as a runway-and-documentary project featuring 20 global creatives. AP also quoted Campbell saying that girls who wanted to work and create for the brand would now have a chance. Her comments point to creative participation and visibility as her public rationale.
What the “couldn’t afford me” remark meant
The Angel comment came years earlier and concerned a different question: why Campbell had not become one of Victoria’s Secret Angels. In 2016, Glamour reported her explanation as “could not afford me.” Glamour attributed the wording to an interview with The Sun, relayed by People, so it is best treated as a statement reported by those publications rather than as a directly verified transcript here.

That remark did not mean Campbell had never worked with Victoria’s Secret. Glamour reported that she had walked the brand’s runway seven times. Nor does the comment explain her later participation in the World Tour: the Angel remark addressed her status, while her 2023 comments addressed the creative project and the opportunities it offered.

Victoria’s Secret presented the World Tour in 2023 as a project combining runway presentation and documentary storytelling. The brand’s fashion show returned to the runway on October 15, 2024, after the show had been canceled in 2019 amid cultural change and a dwindling audience, as Vogue’s 2024 coverage reported. Victoria’s Secret’s own recap framed that night around change and a new era.

These events belong to the same broader comeback story, but they should not be treated as one show. Campbell’s clearly documented explanation relates to her participation in the 2023 World Tour. The available comments do not establish that this was her sole personal or professional motivation, or explicitly explain a separate decision to join the October 2024 runway show.
