Megan Thee Stallion wore a structured, boned corset gown; Karol G chose transparent lace; Doja Cat wore cobweb-like openwork over underwear; and Tinashe paired fishnet with tape. Together, the outfits show how “naked dress” works as fashion coverage shorthand for several different approaches to transparency, not as an official award-show category.
What “naked dress” meant on the 2023 VMAs carpet
In coverage of the September 12, 2023 VMAs, “naked dress” described a range of sheer, mesh, lace, fishnet, and lingerie-influenced looks. It was an editorial label, not a formal dress code or a claim that every attendee wore a revealing outfit. The useful distinction is how each garment handled transparency: through its fabric, construction, layering, or embellishment.
Four different ways the looks used sheer dressing
Megan Thee Stallion: a sheer gown built around corsetry
Megan Thee Stallion wore a custom sheer, boned corset gown by Brandon Blackwood. In a September 12, 2023 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Blackwood said it used two layers of bobbinet and silk grosgrain and was designed to appear like a second skin, customized to fit her curves. He described the design as a way to extend the corset beyond the waist: “We modernized a traditional corset and elongated it into an evening dress, as corsets were used to celebrate just the waist. We wanted to reflect that celebration on the entire body as well.” The effect combined transparency with deliberate structure rather than relying on sheer fabric alone.
Karol G: transparent lace
Karol G wore a transparent, skin-color lace dress. Lace gives a sheer look a different visual texture from a smooth mesh or a boned gown: the pattern itself becomes part of what is visible. The event coverage describes the dress as transparent lace, without establishing a more specific construction or layering detail.

Doja Cat: cobweb-like openwork over underwear
Doja Cat wore a cobweb-style dress layered over nude thong underwear, as described in Glamour’s VMAs coverage. Here, the openwork and the visible underwear were integral to the look. That is distinct from a garment that creates transparency through sheer panels or a fine net fabric.
Tinashe: fishnet with tape
Tinashe wore a sparkling fishnet dress with tape as part of the styling, according to ABC News. Fishnet makes openness explicit through its grid, while the tape added another visible styling detail. The account does not identify a tape brand.

Why the label does not describe every VMAs look
These outfits share visibility of the body, but their construction and styling differ: corsetry, patterned lace, openwork over underwear, and fishnet with tape are not interchangeable. They also vary in how transparency is created and what is layered underneath. The coverage offers examples across those choices, not a formal ranking or a measured count of how common the style was.
Sheer dressing was only one direction on the carpet. Fashionista’s roundup highlighted Olivia Rodrigo in a crystal-covered Ludovic de Saint Sernin dress and Cardi B in an embellished Dilara Findikoglu look. The Guardian’s September 13, 2023 photo gallery also includes non-sheer outfits while using lingerie as a framing for the carpet. The “trend” is therefore best understood as a prominent thread in the night’s fashion coverage—not a description of the entire event or a statistic about what most attendees wore.

How to read the trend
For these VMAs looks, “naked dress” is a broad, retrospective shorthand for garments that used sheer or open construction and lingerie-influenced styling. It covers different combinations of transparency, structure, layering, and embellishment. The phrase is useful for grouping the coverage, but the individual garments—and the many other styles on the carpet—matter more than the label.
