Spoilers: This is the historical NYT Connections puzzle dated May 24, 2024—not a current daily puzzle. The four categories are conduits for water removal, sentimental food terms, things to crack, and words that complete “___ change.”

Hints for the May 24, 2024 Connections puzzle

  • One group names routes that carry water away.
  • Another links food words with sentimentality or mawkishness.
  • Think of four things that can be cracked, including one expression.
  • The final set completes the same phrase when each word comes before “change.”

Category Words
Conduits for water removal DRAIN, DUCT, PIPE, SEWER
Food products associated with sentimentality CHEESE, CORN, SAP, SCHMALTZ
Things to crack EGG, KNUCKLES, SMILE, WINDOW
___ CHANGE CHUMP, CLIMATE, LOOSE, SEA

Why the categories can be tricky

Connections gives players 16 words to sort into four groups of four. Its categories have color-coded difficulty, from yellow as the easiest to purple as the trickiest, and some words may seem to fit more than one possible group. The May 24 puzzle’s phrase-completion set is one useful way to separate words that could otherwise suggest different connections. See the NYT Connections game for the official game.

Where to replay this puzzle

The New York Times says the Connections archive reaches back to June 12, 2023. Its help page documents access for All Access and Games subscribers and says a NYT account is needed to save progress and play history for archived puzzles. Subscription terms can change; check the current NYT Connections help page for the latest access details. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone.

About the puzzle number

The May 24 answer guide identifies this puzzle as #348, while an archive page and a search result identify the same date and solution as #368. Because those references conflict, the date and word sets are the reliable identifiers; the puzzle number is unsettled.
