“The Chain Thus Far” turns the final war’s balance toward catastrophe: Toga uses Twice’s blood to unleash a mass of doubles, Shigaraki releases Decay, and the heroes face a battlefield that seems close to breaking. The episode’s central dramatic question is whether that overwhelming scale leaves room for the personal stakes between Toga and Ochaco—and whether help arriving from an unexpected quarter can make the shift feel meaningful.
What happens in “The Chain Thus Far”?
Spoilers for the episode’s main developments. Toga consumes Twice’s blood, and Kurogiri’s Warp enables numerous Twice doubles to appear. As that threat spreads, Shigaraki releases Decay, compounding the heroes’ danger. Just as the battlefield seems to leave them close to despair, unexpected help arrives.
The episode is Season 7’s 16th, titled “The Chain Thus Far.” Crunchyroll identifies it as overall episode E154. Episode 15, “Butterfly Effect,” ends with Toga preparing to use her secret weapon; the next episode is titled “Hopes.”
How the episode’s two pressures shape the conflict
The scale of the Twice doubles
Toga’s use of Twice’s blood makes the danger feel less like a conventional one-on-one clash and more like a threat multiplying across the battlefield. The stakes are not only whether one hero can overcome one opponent: the doubles threaten to overwhelm the heroes collectively. Kurogiri’s Warp is part of the escalation, helping bring the doubles into the conflict.

Toga and Ochaco’s personal stakes
Set against that mass danger is the confrontation involving Toga and Ochaco. That contrast is the episode’s most important critical test: does the human tension between them remain legible while the wider crisis accelerates? The premise creates a strong opportunity to connect the battlefield’s consequences to the characters trying to reach one another, rather than letting the large-scale threat flatten their individual stakes.
Does the turn toward help work?
The heroes appear close to despair before assistance arrives from an unexpected quarter. That reversal offers a change in the battlefield’s momentum, but its dramatic force depends on more than surprise: the episode needs to give the crisis enough weight for the intervention to register as a meaningful turn, not simply an interruption. The episode listing signals the arrival without naming the helper, so the reveal is best left to the episode itself.

The next episode, “Hopes,” continues the story’s movement toward added support. TV Guide’s synopsis for that episode names Gentle, La Brava, and Lady Nagant. That information clarifies the broader transition, but it does not establish which person the Episode 16 listing means by unexpected help.
