Starting again in Australia
PerthNow’s Sophie Gannon reported that Wu arrived in Australia in 2008 after leaving work as a high-profile chief executive in China. According to that account, she had led two manufacturing companies employing more than 300 people, but arrived without English, a local network or familiarity with Australian systems. Those details are PerthNow’s account of Wu’s background.
Wu told PerthNow: “Starting over in a new country was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” The contrast in her reported story is striking: experience leading large businesses did not remove the practical and personal challenges of rebuilding a life in a new country.
Her earlier career is described differently in another profile. In an October 2025 interview, Crumb Wire placed Wu’s background in the high-end watch-movement industry. Wu told the publication, “I began my career in the high-end watch movement industry, where I learned the importance of precision, patience and quality.” Crumb Wire also reported that her elder son’s interest in food helped spark her own; Wu said, “My love for food was first inspired by my elder son.” These accounts emphasize different aspects of her past, so they are best understood as separate descriptions rather than combined into one definitive career history.

From a food-court stall to a Leederville restaurant
PerthNow reports that Wu spent years supporting her son’s hospitality ventures and learning about the industry before opening My House Dumpling Bar, a small food-court stall, in 2017. That stall was the first step in the restaurant story, not the opening date of the Leederville venue.
When the food-court lease ended during the COVID-19 period, Wu treated the setback as a chance to make a different move. As quoted by PerthNow, she said: “I saw the end of our food court lease as an opportunity, not a failure,” The Leederville restaurant opened in 2020, according to the same report.

The distinction between the two dates matters: 2017 marks the reported start of the dumpling stall, while 2020 marks the reported opening of the restaurant. Wu’s path was not a single leap from a former career to a finished restaurant; it included time learning the business, operating a stall and adapting when that lease ended.
Handmade food and a welcoming atmosphere
Profiles describe My House Dumpling as a restaurant built around hand-folded dumplings, hospitality and a feeling of home. PerthNow says Wu handpicks produce at markets and tastes dishes before they join the menu. Wu described the distinction she wants customers to notice: “This isn’t factory food, this is handmade, every time,”

For someone wondering where to get dumplings in Leederville, Urban List’s directory places My House Dumpling at 140 Oxford Street, Leederville WA 6007. Its coverage highlights spicy prawn and pork wontons, pan-fried vegetable dumplings and chocolate xiao long bao buns. Those are dishes featured in the directory; its listing does not confirm that each remains available on the current menu.

PerthNow also quoted Wu on the example she hopes to offer other women: “I want women, especially migrant women, to know that it’s never too late to start again,” Her story, as the profiles tell it, connects that message to concrete milestones: arriving in Australia, learning a new industry, opening a stall and building a restaurant in Leederville.
