Spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 423. Chapter 423, “OFA vs AFO,” brings the Final War’s central battle to an end: All For One is defeated, but Deku loses One For All’s remaining embers. The last exchange between Deku and Shigaraki makes the victory feel less like a clean triumph than a hard-won, costly farewell. The manga continues in Chapter 424, which begins the epilogue, so the uncertainty here is about what comes after the war—not who won it.

What happens in Chapter 423?

All For One recognizes that the heroes’ combined efforts have left him vulnerable. Deku takes the opening and presses the attack, but the climax is not framed as a victory achieved by one fighter acting alone: the remaining One For All vestiges join the final confrontation, and the work of the other heroes has helped make that decisive moment possible. All For One is defeated.

The chapter then turns from the battle’s physical outcome to Deku and Tomura Shigaraki. Their final exchange gives the conflict a personal farewell as well as a combat resolution. Shigaraki’s last words hold to his destructive purpose; Deku’s attempt to understand and reach him does not erase the damage or restore the life Shigaraki had. Meanwhile, Deku’s victory costs him One For All’s remaining embers.

Why the ending feels bittersweet

The chapter links its victory to inheritance and cooperation. Deku reaches the decisive moment with support from the vestiges and the heroes who have already fought, rather than by simply overpowering All For One on his own. That collective effort makes the resolution feel built up to—but it does not spare Deku a personal loss.

The exchange with Shigaraki is the emotional center because it refuses an easy reconciliation. Deku tries to connect with the person behind the destruction, yet the attempt cannot undo what happened. The result is a complicated kind of closure: the immediate threat is ended, but the cost remains, and sympathy does not become absolution.

Does Chapter 423 end the Final War?

Yes. Chapter 423 closes the Final War confrontation with All For One defeated. Its closing uncertainty is not a new combat cliffhanger in which the war’s outcome remains undecided. Instead, it leaves readers to consider what victory means for Deku after losing One For All’s remaining embers, and what the aftermath will look like for the characters and world left behind.

Does Chapter 423 end My Hero Academia?

No. Shueisha’s contents for the Japanese print edition of Volume 42 place Chapter 423, “OFA vs AFO,” before Chapter 424, “Epilogue,” and continue through Chapter 431, “More.” VIZ describes My Hero Academia, Vol. 42 as the final volume. Chapter 423 ends the central war battle, not the manga itself.

Does the chapter’s pacing work?

The chapter’s compression is its clearest trade-off. It moves through the final attack, All For One’s defeat, the vestiges’ role, the Deku–Shigaraki farewell, and the loss of One For All’s embers in a short span. That pace keeps the climax moving and gives the battle a definite endpoint, but it also means several major turns arrive close together. The emotional beats have weight; some readers may still wish the chapter gave them more room to settle.

That tension is part of the ending’s effect: the battle is over, but the consequences are only beginning to come into view. Chapter 424’s epilogue is where the story moves into that aftermath.
