What happened at Jet Set nightclub?
The Dominican government’s 911 emergency service recorded the roof collapse at Jet Set, on Avenida Independencia in Santo Domingo, at 12:44 a.m. on April 8, 2025. Rubby Pérez was performing at the club. His manager confirmed his death to The Washington Post. The Associated Press reported that Pérez was 69 and that dust began falling before the roof gave way.
In a statement reported by The Washington Post, President Luis Abinader said, “We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub.” He also said relief agencies were assisting and working in the rescue effort.
How many people died in the collapse?
On April 14, 2025, the Dominican National Police reported 231 deaths: 221 people at the disaster site and 10 in hospitals. This is a dated official report. Earlier reports gave lower figures as rescue and recovery operations continued; for example, the Associated Press reported 221 deaths on April 10. Those figures reflect different reporting moments, not a single unchanged count.

Reuters reported on April 11 that 189 people had been rescued from the rubble, citing the National Health Service. That rescue figure is a separate, dated measure and should not be added to or compared directly with the later death toll.

April 8: Emergency response begins
The 911 service coordinated the response after the collapse in the early hours of April 8. Rescue teams searched the site for survivors.

April 9: Work shifts toward recovery
The Dominican government said more than 300 responders remained active on April 9. Officials expected the operation to move from search and rescue toward recovery of bodies, while rescue work continued.
April 11: Investigation still underway
Reuters reported that an official report had not clarified the cause and that both the cause and attendance figures remained under investigation at that time.
April 14 and June 11: Toll reported; engineering report delivered
The National Police reported the 231 deaths on April 14. On June 11, Diario Libre reported that the forensic engineering report prepared by ONESVIE had been delivered to the Attorney General’s office. The engineering commission’s director did not provide substantive details of the report’s findings in that account.
What caused the Jet Set roof collapse?
The reports cited here do not establish a final cause. Reuters said on April 11 that the government report had not clarified the cause and that the investigation was continuing. Diario Libre later reported the delivery of a forensic engineering report to prosecutors, but did not describe a conclusion from it. The cause, responsibility, and any later authoritative findings therefore cannot be stated as settled on the basis of these reports. Speculation about maintenance, prior damage, negligence, or the roof’s load is not evidence of an official finding.

Who was Rubby Pérez?
Pérez was a prominent merengue singer. The Associated Press highlighted “Volveré,” which he sang with Wilfrido Vargas’s orchestra, and “Buscando tus besos,” from his solo career. He was performing at Jet Set when the disaster occurred.
