Yes—Sphere Entertainment and public and private partners have proposed a 6,000-seat Sphere at National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C. It is not an approved or operating venue: as of October 8, 2026, a key County Council vote was still scheduled for October 27, and the company said site-plan and permit work was underway.
Where would the Sphere be?
The proposed site is at National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Prince George’s County, Maryland, immediately north of MGM National Harbor. National Harbor is part of the Washington metropolitan area, not Washington, D.C. itself. The County Economic Development Corporation’s 2026 summary of planning documents describes a site of more than 14 acres. County Economic Development Corporation
What is planned?
Sphere Entertainment described the project, announced January 18, 2026, as its second U.S. Sphere and the first using its smaller-scale design model. The concept calls for 6,000 seats and immersive visual, audio, haptic and environmental effects. These are proposed specifications, not confirmation of a completed build. Sphere Entertainment announcement
- Exterior: An Exosphere LED display intended for artistic and branded content.
- Interior: A 16K x 16K display plane, Sphere Immersive Sound, haptic seating and 4D environmental effects.
Planning-document details summarized by the County Economic Development Corporation put the proposed venue at 302 feet tall, with a maximum diameter of 428 feet and roughly 418,000 square feet. Those are planning-stage reported measurements, not final as-built dimensions. County Economic Development Corporation

What is its status?
The proposal has not cleared every approval or financing step. Sphere Entertainment’s January announcement said development, construction, financing and operation depended on definitive agreements and receipt of certain governmental incentives and approvals from Maryland and Prince George’s County. On October 5, 2026, the County Council advanced amended CB-111-2026 and scheduled a final vote for October 27. The amendments would require a community benefits agreement and a labor peace agreement. The Council said the community benefits agreement could cover local hiring, participation by County-based minority- and small businesses, training, youth and community programs, and accountability; the labor peace agreement would apply to developers, tenants, contractors and subcontractors as applicable. A public listening session had taken place on September 22. County Council update County bill record

- Authentic, Real-World Construction Experience: The Pitsco True Scale House Framing Kit delivers a realistic construction model rather than simple assembly play. Students build a true 1:16 scale house model using 485 precision-cut balsa wood pieces, following professional-style house plans and construction methods aligned to real building practices. This architectural framing kit helps learners understand stud framing, scale lumber, and structural design in a way traditional model kits cannot.
- Blueprint Reading & Skill-Building: Designed as a hands-on architecture lesson for ages 14+, this model house framing kit guides students through a structured learning progression. Learners begin by interpreting blueprints, measuring to scale, and understanding architectural drawings before cutting, framing, and assembling the structure. The challenge builds accuracy, focus, and confidence, making it ideal for homeschooling, high school engineering projects, and blueprint reading practice tools.
- Choice-Based Design & Structural Comparison: Unlike most balsa wood house kits, this architectural model making supply allows students to choose between two realistic roof systems: truss or hip. Comparing a truss building kit to a hip roof framing model gives learners firsthand experience with real-world structural approaches used in residential construction, reinforcing problem-solving, interpretation, and decision-making while maintaining authentic construction standards.
- Classroom-Ready & Collaborative by Design: This classroom building kit is designed for individual or paired work, supporting collaboration and communication as students divide tasks, measure materials, and assemble the wooden house frame model together. Instructions are student-facing, with minimal teacher prep required beyond gathering shared tools. Projects can be stored safely during multi-week builds, making it well suited for extended classroom use.
- Career Pathways in Construction & Design: The True Scale House Framing Kit connects hands-on building to real careers in construction, architecture, engineering, drafting, and skilled trades. By applying construction terminology, reading plans, and working with a realistic construction model, students gain exposure to Career and Technical Education (CTE) construction concepts and civil engineering foundations, positioning this as a powerful architecture study kit and vocational training resource.
On Sphere Entertainment’s Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO James Dolan said the company had filed a detailed site plan with the County, was working to secure permits and expected to complete third-party financing “in the near term.” He also said the venue could open in under four years. Those were management updates and expectations—not evidence that permits or financing were complete, or an official opening date. Q2 2026 earnings-call transcript
How large is the proposal compared with Las Vegas?
The published comparison is limited but useful: the National Harbor concept is proposed for 6,000 seats, while the County Economic Development Corporation describes the Las Vegas Sphere as seating roughly 18,000. The National Harbor proposal would therefore be substantially smaller by announced capacity. Sphere Entertainment announcement County Economic Development Corporation

What economic effects are projected?
Prince George’s County’s February 2026 release attributed its economic estimates to an EY analysis. They are modeled projections, not observed results from an operating venue. County economic-impact release
- Annual impact once operating: $1.3 billion projected in Prince George’s County and $200 million elsewhere in Maryland, or $1.5 billion statewide.
- Construction-period impact: $1.6 billion projected in the County and $250 million elsewhere in Maryland, or $1.85 billion statewide.
- Employment estimates: 3,350 construction-period and supplier/consumer-supported jobs; 7,100 County jobs once operating, including 1,250 Sphere employees and 5,850 supported by visitors, suppliers and induced spending; and 880 additional jobs elsewhere in Maryland.
The project announcement described approximately $200 million in combined state, local and private incentives. Separately, the County bill record describes proposed special-obligation bonds capped at $215 million in aggregate principal for uses including refunding or purchasing existing bonds and financing or reimbursing eligible venue and infrastructure costs. These figures refer to different things: the announcement’s combined incentive description is not the same as the bill’s proposed bond cap, and the legislation was still pending a final vote as of October 8.
